Viva Frida (Morales, Yuyi), by Yuyi Morales

From School Library Journal

Gr 1 Up—Kahlo's unusual life story, background, and art have made her a frequent topic of biographies. Morales's perception of her creative process results in a fresh, winning take on an artist who has rarely been understood. The author uses strong verbs to give Kahlo voice: "I see (Veo)"; "Sé (I know)." Kahlo is depicted as a self-possessed woman with a drive to create. Her artistic process has room for others to participate, though—love, imagination, and dreams are closely entangled in her art. In the illustrations, Diego Rivera is shown creating alongside his wife. While the artistic process seems magical to readers, Kahlo knows what she is searching for. Each spread has just one or two words on it, both in English and Spanish. The text floats on the page, with the Spanish in a lighter color, adding to the ethereal, dreamlike feel of the book. Morales's art and O'Meara's photographs take this book to another level. Created with stop-motion puppets, paintings, and digital elements, these are amazing works of art themselves. The puppets are lifelike, resembling Kahlo (with her unibrow) and Rivera accurately. They are surrounded by the animals Kahlo loved, including vibrant feathered parrots, a monkey, and dog. Throughout the book, Kahlo goes searching for inspiration and finds it all around her. Morales incorporates many of the hallmarks of Kahlo's art into her own. The artist wears silver, open-hand earrings and multicolored dresses. She plays with a skeleton puppet on these pages and imagines herself soaring, freed from her fragile body. Morales's note in both English and Spanish describes her connection with Kahlo. A resonant title that can be used anywhere Kahlo's art is studied. It will also be admired in bilingual collections.—Susan E. Murray, formerly at Glendale Public Library, AZ

Review

“In this exploration of the imagery of artist Frida Kahlo, brief two- or three-word sentences provide dreamlike narration, and mixed-media images follow Frida as she discovers and opens a bright yellow wooden chest, releasing a fantasy in which playfulness leads to a knowledge, love, creativity, and ultimately, to her embrace of life.” ―BCCB“Morales artistically distills the essence of the remarkable Frida Kahlo in this esoteric, multigenre picture book.” ―Booklist“*There have been several books for young readers about Frida Kahlo, but none has come close to the emotional aesthetic Morales brings to her subjects . . . an ingenious tour de force.” ―The Horn Book, STARRED REVIEW“This luminescent homage to Frida Kahlo doesn't hew to her artwork's mood but entrances on its own merit . . . Visually radiant.” ―Kirkus Reviews“*Kahlo's unusual life story, background, and art have made her a frequent topic of biographies. Morales's perception of her creative process results in a fresh, winning take on an artist who has rarely been understood . . . Morales's art and O'Meara's photographs take this book to another level.” ―School Library Journal, STARRED REVIEW“STARRED REVIEW Frida is presented less as a historical figure than as an icon who represents the life Morales holds sacred; Frida lives because she loves and creates.” ―Publisher's Weekly

I am a teacher and bought the book to read to my 2nd and 3rd grade students. Then I planned that we would draw and make self-portraits. The reviews were so strong I thought it would be a fabulous book. When I received it I was dismayed. The text is almost non-existent. It consists of poetic phrases such as, "I dream" and "I understand." Most of the pages have one word upon it like "search." The worst book to read to children, we will finish it in two seconds. The book tells nothing about the history of her life, her back pain, her ancestry, life in Mexico, her imagery and artworks, nothing. .. She was a strong woman who spent a large portion of her life painting in bed. There are no reproductions or artistic remakes of her art in the book either. However, the book is beautiful and does have very pretty photographs of dolls and illustrations. As an artist, I found it to be a rather stereotyped and generic view of the soulful inner being of an artist. I don't think it represents the soul and inner being of Frida Khalo herself. She was much more complex and beautiful than the story (words) in this book imply. The illustrations and photographs suggest a much more complex and interesting story, but one that is not uncovered fully in the book. It would have been more compelling to have the beginning part of the book have her in pain in bed painting and then have the book switch to her soul and magical imaginings. To show that she was a survivor who had a gorgeous inner life. It was not at all what I was looking for. If one already knows about Frida and her art, this is fine. Or if you seek a purely poetic book with no background information this is the book for you.

It has pretty illustrations, but no story and nothing to keep a child entertained.

This book is awesome I use it in a 2nd grade portrait lesson centered around personal symbols. This book is short and sweet with colorful images that help my students to later engage with some of her artworks. My favorite part of the book is the personal blurb written by the author that tells the story of Frida's life and why she paints included in both English and Spanish.

Good book. Beautiful pictures

my 10 y/o daughter loves this book so much that she took it to school to share with her friends and she has decided she wants to be frida for halloween.

Yuyi Morales has created a love letter to Frida Kahlo. On this blog maintained by Julie Danielson http://blaine.org/sevenimpossiblethings/?p=3559Yuyi has generously detailed how she created this book. Also, it's bilingual.

A beautifully realized child's book introducing Freida Kahlo. Done in several mediums the artwork is dynamic and obviously inspired by Kahlo's work. Love it.

Really enjoyed this book. It is like reading a report on Frida, learned a couple of things I didn't know. Very happy with my purchase...Viva Frida!

This book covers only some of the area around downtown Kansas City. Union Hill is barely covered. Crown Center is barely touched. Covers only part of the lawn by the National WWI Museum, not the structures themselves. The Plaza, the Nelson, the Truman Library, the Truman Sports Complex? They are not mapped. Within the limited area that is covered, a lot of that space would be of little interest to tourists. This book would seem to be of little value to visitors to my beloved boyhood home, especially when considering what Google Maps and other services provide.

#7,165 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

I just spent the past three hours reading this incredible book. I am currently fighting stage 4 head and neck cancer for the past year. This book and the way it brought the life of legendary coaches to life on a personal level has given me the faith and determination to keep fighting and ultimately prevail. Thank you.

I expected this book to be good just from the title and it did not disappoint. I have been holding on to anger at someone I looked up to and trusted that double crossed me. This book hit me right between the eyes to let that anger motivate me to reach my full potential. The warrior has been awaken again.

The lessons contained in this book are practical and easy to use for athletes or non athletes. The book is based on a fictional football coach but weaves in snippets of wisdom from famous real life coaches in fictional settings. I would highly recommend reading all of the Darrin Donnelly books.

As a person who loves books and seeks inspiration from inspiring people and attitudes, I loved this book. When I was 12 years old in 1958 the Baltimore Colts won the World Championship 23-17 in overtime against New York. I didn't yet have the concept of great states to collect and relive again and again, but once I was aware of how our brain can collect our favorite and most powerful states and our mind can relive those feelings I have made a personal collection of positive states. "Think Like a Warrior" will add great states to anyone who can connect with the ideas of these five inspiring coaches. I am in the Happiness Hall of fame and view my life mission to spread happiness. These five inner beliefs will enable everyone who sincerely wishes to create more happiness for more people to upgrade their level of success.

I just finished the book, "Think Like A Warrior" - The Five Inner Beliefs That Make You Unstoppable and it is a fantastic read. No matter if you're an athlete, student, employee or teacher/coach. The book is written through the eyes of a college football coach but applies to all walks of life. Unlike many self-help books that are too complicated to convey its point(s), this book is simply written so that you can read it, understand it and benefit from it immediately. I'm going to pass it along to my daughter and son to read. Don't pass up this little gem...

I read Think Like a Warrior over the weekend, and really enjoyed it. I'm a firm believer of the positive impact competition and sport can have on someone's life, how it can prepare you for whatever "game" you play. The 5 lessons in this book, however, go beyond sport. Lessons I've learned before, and when put into action makes anything attainable. I loved getting inspired again. Thanks!

A lot of books are about textbook rhetoric: Why it's important; why you should want it; what caused the problem; approaches to fixing the problem; why some approaches don't work; blah, blah, blah. This book tells a compelling story that we can relate to - which makes it a Fun read, and helps you understand the points! You're gonna love it.If you've read Darrin Donnelly's book on Optimism and are concerned that this is much the same, don't worry about it. This is a completely different book with a different kind of story.

I'm not sure which of Darrin's series of books is best but they are all great. I love the old school mentality applied to today. Having Grit, being the best you can be despite odds and external influences. Taking control of you and your circumstances. I can honestly say I apply these principals he's laid out in story form in my life. My life has changed for the better is so many ways in recent years. Yes my personal choices are mine but you are a product of what you take in.Effort and Attitude man... Start with the first book and keep going. Can't wait for the next in the series.

Americans Rhoda and Delia met during the Great War and immediately became soulmates. Both marry: Rhoda an Italian and Delia an Ethiopian, and both have children, a girl and a boy, respectively. Together they performed airplane acrobatics as Black Dove (Delia) and White Raven (Rhoda) and raised their children alone—until the day Delia died from a bird strike. But she and Rhoda had a dream: to go live in Ethiopia, where Delia and her son Teo would live a life without the segregation rampant in the United States in the 1920s; Rhoda was still determined to make that dream come true, and eventually it did. But the little family of three—Rhoda, daughter Emilia, and Teo—are about to lose their happy life when the Italians advance on Ethiopia.Taking place mainly in the 1930s, and told alternately by Em, Teo, and through their fictional Black Dove/White Raven stories in which the fears emerging in their lives take fictional form, this appealing adventure story follows Em and Teo from their earliest memories to the "now" of the threat of Italian invasion, where Rhoda fights for their home and Teo learns a horrifying secret about his father that affects his future. Both children learn to fly from Rhoda, but while Teo is a natural pilot, Em struggles with each flight, until a crisis forces her to face her fears.Wein paints a lovely portrait of pre-invasion Ethiopia, where modern medicine and respect for native culture co-exist, and of the bond shared by Delia and Rhoda that lasts beyond death and the friendship of Emilia and Teo. Rhoda's unconventional Quaker family is also a compelling factor in the opening chapters of the book. The landscapes are lovingly drawn and, as always in a Wein novel, the magic and majesty of flying has a prominent role. While the situation may not be quite as compelling as CODE NAME VERITY, the characters and setting are unforgettable.

This historical novel for young adult readers is a remarkable achievement. First of all, the novel has a great plot. It is set in Ethiopia during the Italian-Ethiopian war of 1935-1936, which in East Africa ushered in World War II. Its main characters are two teenagers, both children of American mothers who earned a living as stunt pilots after World War I and married foreign husbands. Emilia (or Em) is the daughter of a white mother from Pennsylvania (Rhoda or “White Raven”) and an Italian aviator father, while Teodros (or Teo) is the orphaned son of an African American mother (Delia or “Black Dove”) and an Ethiopian expatriate father. Rhoda is heart-broken when Delia dies in a plane-crash caused by hitting a swarm of birds. After several years of emotional paralysis, she decides to honor the plans she and Delia had made before the latter’s death and moves her family, now including both Em and Teo, to a clinic in a rural village in Ethiopia. They arrive on the eve of Mussolini’s invasion, just as Emperor Haile Selassie begins to prepare for war by drafting Ethiopian men into his army. Em’s Italian father is a pilot on the Italian side. Teo, as the son of an Ethiopian father, is drafted on the Ethiopian side, even if for a very special and unexpected mission. In her attempt to save her children, Rhoda teaches both of them to fly, thus confirming the roles Teo and Em had already adopted in their fantasy life – those of the newly embodied “Black Dove” and “White Raven.”The second remarkable feature of this novel is that all its major characters are beautifully and imaginatively drawn. Em and Teo, as non-traditional siblings and creative soul mates, come fully alive, Teo as the super-smart, quiet, reflective boy, who can make himself almost invisible, and Em as the impetuous and flamboyant girl, exceptionally gifted in her own tomboyish ways. Even in the midst of the most unlikely events, Teo and Em’s characters make full emotional sense to the reader. The friendship between Rhoda and Delia, whose spirit is an inspiration to all of them, is mirrored in that between Em and Teo, giving both relationships extra depth and power. The novel’s other characters include Rhoda’s close Ethiopian friend Sindiku, a nurse who cares for the victims of Italian mustard gas bombs; the old Ethiopian priest Habte Sadek, keeper of some of the most sacred Ethiopian objects of devotion, and the flamboyant African American pilot in Haile Selassie’s service, Horatio Augustus (based on the person of Hubert Julian, who in real life indeed crashed the Emperor’s private plane in a rehearsal of the coronation ceremony).Wein’s story and characters reveal the destructive power of institutional racism (differently configured, of course) in both the U.S. and Ethiopia, as well as that of colonial aggression and occupation. Individuals cannot fully escape such structures of inequality, Wein’s story suggests. However, they are, at the same time, not fully determined by them and their choices and actions make a real difference resisting and overcoming injustice. This, together with the taken-for-granted, enjoyable, feminism of the characters, makes this an uplifting story. The novel’s form is a third remarkable feature of this novel, for it allows Em and Teo to tell the whole story through their own writings and in their own voices. These writings include compositions written as homework for their homeschool teacher in Ethiopia and, later, for Em’s mother; diary-like flight logs of their training as pilots, and even fantasy adventure stories (fiction within fiction) in which Teo and Em imagine themselves as the heroic protagonists “Black Dove” and “White Raven.” These fantasy stories, including, for example, “Episode from ‘The Land of Glass,’” (pp. 222-223), and are so imaginative, whimsical, and rich in metaphor that one could love this novel for them alone. Finally, the image of Ethiopia that emerges from Teo and Em’s descriptions is stunning and rich. The reader can smell the warm, dusty, and smoky air of Addis Ababa by night as the two teenagers walk through the city on their way to Teo’s uncle; and we can see the flat and bare mountain tops, the green and fertile valleys, and the isolated mountain monasteries, as the two young pilots fly their small plane high above it all. Like the Ethiopian landscape, Ethiopian characters such as the bodyguard of a feudal lord, the Ethiopian staff of a small rural clinic, the abbot of a monastery built into a set of caves, the feudal lord in a mountain stronghold, and the Emperor himself, are beautifully and respectfully drawn with a sharp eye for the concrete and the everyday as they impact senses and sentiment. This reviewer found the form of book’s beginning (respectively, a flight log including a letter to Emperor Haile Selassie by Em, a brief episode of an imaginary adventure story by Teo, and a homework composition by Em) structurally too complex and somewhat off-putting. This might discourage any reader, let alone a young one. However, whoever perseveres beyond the first pages, whether one is 15 or 65 years old, will enjoy this imaginative novel and learn much on the way.Elizabeth Wein is the author of two other highly acclaimed and prize-winning historical novels for young adults, Code Name Verity (2012) and Rose Under Fire (2013), both set in World War II.Highly recommended.Reviewed by Lidwien Kapteijns, Ph. D., Wellesley CollegePublished in Africa Access Review (March 11, 2016)Copyright 2016 Africa Access

I think my favorite part of this book was how rich the historical setting and details are. Evidence of how hard the author worked to get things right are seen throughout the entire book. She brings to life a part of the WWII era not often explored, in fiction or otherwise, the Italian invasion of Ethiopia and how WWII impacted this part of the world. She also brings to life a culture that is unique, colorful, and different than any Westerners are used to. She definitely transports her readers in every way, the hallmark of a great historical fiction writer.I also really enjoyed her characters; all are different and exceptional. Steady Teo, intrepid Em, and protective Rhoda all make their mark on the reader’s hearts. Even Delia has a strong presence, even though she was dead for most the book. She serves as a motivation and driver for the book after that event due to her strong personality early on. The secondary characters also exhibit their own personality traits and quirks, making them remarkable and remember-able to the reader long after reading. The format of the story was different than I’ve seen used before, but then, I’ve grown to expect that from this author. The story is told in a combination of letters, memories, flight logs, and fictional stories written by Teo and Em. I liked how this gave the story a distinctive feel and flow. The only part I wasn’t that thrilled with was the fictional story parts. As they were written by children, of course their tone and content will be way different than the flight logs and such. But I found myself thrown out of the story more than once trying to digest these pieces in the middle of the others.Overall, this is a great book looking at a part of WWII that isn’t often explored in WWII literature. Great characters and historical details make this an engrossing read and puts the story into the reader’s hearts hard. The unique format works in most places but not as well in others. Still definitely a book to look at and recommend to lovers of the genre. Another great example of this author’s work as well.

This is a decent guide for the PSAT 8/9.Only thing is that at times the solutions are brief. The first part covers the math content followed by two practice tests for math.

This book helped me to prepare my 8th graders for the PSAT8!

Good prep workbook

If you have an 8th or 9th grade student that is already focused on taking the SAT and getting into college, count yourself lucky to have such a dedicated teen. Then get them this Math Workbook. This is a great opportunity for your student to give themselves plenty of time to go through this guide and strengthen their math skills. The PSAT 8/9 will test them on reading, math and writing/language as a prep test for the all-important SAT when it’s time.I like the way that the guide is organized, beginning with a section on test-taking strategies that your teen can use with any kind of test they take in the future. There’s also an offer of a free test-taking DVD that they can send away for. What I like most about this Math Workbook is that there are two complete Math practice tests inside, along with the correct answers and detailed explanations of why an answer was correct. This is exactly the type of help your teen will need, especially if you can't help them with algebra or any of the new math they're learning.

This workbook is great for students studying for the PSAT. It is organized well. The learning section focuses on teaching the different math problems that will be on the test. It is also great if you just need a quick review. It begins with basic algebra and builds up to more complex problems. The instructions are clear and easy to understand with each type of problem. The practice tests have a variety of math problems you would encounter on the actual test. You could time yourself if you wanted. The front of the book has a chart with the test breakdown including the allotted time for each section. After each of the two tests you will find the answer keys. There are instructions on how to solve the problem and if you needed you could always refer back to the learning section for more detail. At the beginning of the book there are also some great test taking tips to help you with a successful test day. Over all I think this work book is a good resource for taking the PSAT test. Good luck!

Got this book for my freshman who is preparing to take her PSAT's on Oct 10th. She was feeling a little unsettled since she typically doesnt test very well in Math. We obtained this guide in hopes to calm her nerves, and it did just that! It gave her practice questions and tips and tricks which gave her the confidence to get over her self doubt! She is now looking forward to her PSAT's and feels confident that she will get a great score!

This is a really great book. I am trying to prepare my daughter to take this test and I do not remember majority of the math that’s tested on this exam. This book does a great job of breaking down each concept to help refresh my memory. Since the actual exam is broken into two different sections, calculator ok verses no calculator, I would love It if the practice exams was broken into those sections as well. This would give my daughter an idea of what kinds of questions she would not be able to use a calculator on. Other than that I really enjoyed reading this book.

This workbook is easy to read and follow. It has 2 practice tests. I would suggest this book for beginners or slower learning students.

Review

"A brilliant blend of in-depth scholarship with an easy-to-understand conversational narrative. . . . An enjoyable read and a good guide for those who desire to explore the path of biblical wisdom." (Ted Hildebrandt, Gordon College)"This handy volume will solve the riddle of the book of Proverbs for many. Longman's guidance for interpreting biblical proverbs in general is lucid and his clarification of special issues raised by Proverbs extremely helpful. A must-read for all who study and teach the book." (Daniel I. Block, D.Phil., Associate Dean, John R. Sampey Professor of Old Testament Interpretation, The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary)

Tremper Longman has provided a very readable and useful snapshot into the book of Proverbs. There are no overly academic descriptions here; Dr. Longman successfully promotes sound exegetical ideas into very simple-sounding English. But don't let the simplicity fool you; there is a lot of important information here that will save you a lot of pain in the future if you heed the author's advice. If you are reading this I'm assuming you have an interest in studying the book of Proverbs, so I won't try to convince you of the value of Proverbs.Dr. Longman gives the reader plenty of background information in three informative sections. The first section deals with background on the nature of the proverb; what it is and what it is not. Knowing the historical setting is stressed. Exegetical principles are established by looking for patterns such as parallelism, and numerical parallelism, imagery and others. The second section deals with the context of wisdom in the Bible; how the comments in Proverbs relate to other Bible books such as Job and Ecclesiastes. On this topic, Tremper Longman may be one of the best because he has written extensively on the Hebrew wisdom literature, and his Biblical and historical insights are quite valuable. The final section is a list of a few special studies in proverbs, such as the topic of money and marriage. Although not exhaustive, they are insightful and help the reader to see how to put the ideas of the previous sections into practice. The author deals with practical issues such as "Are proverbs always true?" This chapter is worth the price of the book, because in my experience Christians tend to take proverbs as always true when in fact they are reflections on life that are generally true. Why some proverbs seem to contradict each other is also discussed very well. Dr. Longman treats with integrity and thoughtfulness the topic of is Jesus/Yeshua referred to as the "wisdom" in Proverbs 8. And the comparison of proverbs to other forms of ancient literature was a real treat. In short, this is a great first-stop shopping book that I recommend prior to a study of Proverbs. The book is not overly Jewish, but you will gain some insight into ancient Jewish culture from this study of wisdom literature. Advanced scholarly types might not find the book as useful, but Longman's explanations are pretty thoughtful and would be very useful for teaching purposes. I think regardless of training, you will still find some helpful insights. The book could also be the topic of a Bible study, since there are a series of group-discussion questions at the end of each chapter. There are also lots of suggestions for further reading, and a list of useful commentaries. A delightful book overall that will enhance your walk with God!

This book helps the reader better understand the broader context of the book of Proverbs in terms of its cultural context as well as its relationship to other books of the Bible. Further it develops an approach for drawing out thematic applications (e.g. speech, money, relationships, etc).

For a brief, nontechnical introduction to Proverbs, and wisdom literature in general, you will want this book. Longman discusses Proverbs in three sections: 1) General overview of Proverbs and wisdom; 2) How Proverbs fits into the overall theme of ancient wisdom (this includes the other wisdom books in the Bible and wisdom in other parts of the ancient world); and 3) Themes in Proverbs (money, love & marriage, wise and foolish words). This book is not a verse by verse study of Proverbs. For that you will want a commentary, such as that by Dave Bland or Bruce Waltke (see my reviews). Instead, this book is an introduction to Proverbs and the nature of wisdom literature.Chapter one is entitled "Why Read Proverbs?" Below are comments from that chapter:"Wisdom is the skill of living." (P.14)"Wisdom entails the ability to avoid problems, and the skill to handle them when they present themselves. Wisdom also includes the ability to interpret other people's speech and writing in order to react correctly to what they are saying to us." (Pp.14-15)Proverbs is more about E.Q. (emotional quotient) than I.Q. (intelligent quotient). Proverbs uses stories of animals (Prov. 24-28). "These animals don't have a high I.Q., but the verses plainly describe a skill in living that is remarkable.""People who have a high I.Q. know many facts; they can solve difficult mathematical equations. Their ability to reason and use logic is superior to others'. People with emotional intelligence have other abilities, including `self-control, zeal and persistence and the ability to motivate oneself ... to control impulse and delay gratification; to regulate one's moods and keep distress from swamping the ability to think...'" (Longman quotes from Daniel Goleman, Emotional Intelligence). Biblical wisdom is closer to EQ than IQ. (P.15-16)"Wisdom is a skill, a `knowing how': it is not raw intellect, a `knowing that.'" "Why read Proverbs, then? To gain wisdom, which is an ability to navigate life." (P.16)You'll appreciate the insights Longman's book will give you to get a handle on wisdom in general and Proverbs in particular. I recommend it.
