Ah, so many lost childhoods! Members of my husbands family also lost their childhood in these atrocious WWII Japanese concentration camps so I was already familiar with the topic, but this book added to my understanding of their experience. Very touching and worthwhile book will further your understanding and for some be quite shocking but it is all true.I highly recommend reading this and the numerous other books that have been written on the topic of the Japanese internment of innocent civilians.

Young Dutch children through to non-combatant Dutch adults were forced into POW-like prison camps in Java. The Japanese wanted an Indonesian government answerable to the Japanese; permission for this in early 1942 was obtained from the first post-WW II Indonesian president, Sukarno. The Dutch were to have no part in government.The way the Dutch were treated by the Japanese guards followed very closely on treatment handed out to Allied POWs. There was totally inadequate diet, inappropriate accommodation, almost no medical facilities, punishment for those who did not learn the Japanese language, and totally inadequate latrine facilities.About all the concession given to the Dutch prisoners, compared with Allied POWs, was the Japanese did not require the Dutch to build a railway.But, perhaps worse than the treatment of POWs, the Dutch would have no home to go to after repatriation. After the 1945 armistice, Indonesians opposed any of the Dutch returning to their way of life before the Japanese invasion. The ex-prisoners suffered many of the traumas of ex-POWs.

While in Japanese internment camps myself, I remember hearing about the terrible conditions at Halmaheira, the camp where Annelex spent most of her internment. Her booklet (just over 100 pages) bears this out quite well. Reading about people's suffering is never enjoyable. That said, her story is exceptionally well written.

I was in West Java during that same time and spent 2 years in a Japanese cconcentration camp in Bandoeng and Jakarta. I had just written my own memories of the experience and was fascinated by both the similarities and the profound differences of the two experiences.I am wondering if there would be interest about my story being published. I would have to flesh it out somewhat because I wrote it in the form of a time line event story without much of the personal aspects/

This is a well written and interesting book about an experience that hopefully few people will experience. This is a good book for families to read and talk about.

The book came undamaged. I needed it as a present for my sister who was 4 years old when she entered a Japanese concentration camp.

When I was growing up, we learned everything we could about World War II. Most of the focus was on Hitler's rise to power and the horrors of the concentration camps. However, I don't remember learning anything about the Japanese occupation of the Dutch East Indies following the bombing of Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941. Annelex Hofstra Layson shares her own account of that harrowing period in her autobiography Lost Childhood: My Life in a Japanese Prison Camp During World War II.Before the Pearl Harbor bombing, life was easy and carefree for 4 year old Lex. Her days were filled with playing outside with her older brother and the other neighborhood kids. Her father was a pilot instructor in the Dutch Navy and her mother and grandmother looked after the home and the children with the help of a cook (Kokkie), a maid (Baboa), and a butler (Djongos).Everything changed for the worst after the Japanese invasion of the small island of Java. Lex's father was sent away on a mission and shortly thereafter the rest of the family was forced to relocate. Little Lex was too young to understand that this wasn't a vacation, but a four and a half long internment in the Japanese concentration camps Gegandan and Halmaheria.Separated from her big brother (he was sent to an all male prison camp), Lex and her mother and grandmother endured unimaginable horrors: grueling labor, physical and mental abuse, witnessing murder, starvation, disgusting sanitary conditions and rampant disease. The little Dutch girl managed to survive in thanks to the strength, love, and courage of her mother. Sadly, the liberation from the camps (which wasn't swift) didn't bring an immediate happy ending. Many former prisoners met their end at the bullets and machetes of infuriated Indonesian natives and one casualty was a member of the Hofstra family.In the introduction penned by co-author Herman J. Viola, it's revealed that Annelex was hesitant to open up about her childhood war experiences and kept her traumatic past secret from her now deceased husband and two children for 60 years. It's easy to see why. The fact that she was able to create a productable, fulfilling life for herself after going through such hell is remarkable.Lost Childhood is targeted to the 9 to 12 year old set and it's an excellent, easy to read introduction to a part of world history that's rarely touched on. Some details of concentration camp horrors like one prisoner having parasitic worms extracted from her throat or Lex seeing a truck filled with dead bodies might be too much for some children, but the author doesn't dwell on the graphic elements too much. There are seven black and white photos featured as well as an informative timeline documenting the length of the war as well as the independence of what is now Indonesia.For a more adult, in-depth memoir of a Dutch child's life in a Japanese prison camp, be sure to pick up Clara Olinka Kelly's The Flamboya Tree, but Lost Childhood isn't a bad place to start.

As a parent coach I use Karen Bonnell's book all the time! It's an amazing resource. I recommend it to every one of my clients who are Co-parenting. A wealth of knowlege!

If you’re going through a separation or divorce, or are considering doing so this book offers valuable advice on what parents and children may go through. Both sides of the couple are represented, kids of all ages are considered, and it’s an easy read. I skipped chapters or sections that didn’t apply to my situation. It’s peovided me with new perspectives as a parent and person working through divorce with kids.

When I picked up this book, I was unexpectedly ending a 17 year marriage with two children, ages 12 and 4. My personal divorce was a necessary and challenging, but an eye-opening experience for me since I have never experienced (nor anticipated) the side-effects of a divorce in my lifetime. Therefore, when it came to helping my children adapt with this new life change, I felt I needed all the help I could get. This particular book encompasses and discusses many different faucets surrounding "uncoupling": parental emotions, parental conflict, secure home for children, communication, expenses, new relationships, etc... Overall, helping yourself, your children, and co-parent adapt to the new circumstances. There is one quote on the "Note about Family Page," that honestly summed up so much for me, "There is no such thing as a 'broken family.' Family is family, and is not determined by marriage certificates, divorce papers, and adoption documents. Families are made in the heart." (-C. Joybell C)This was a valuable read for me personally. The highlights at the end of each chapter were helpful if I found myself short on reading time and I was just interested about that chapter topic and I could go back and re-read that chapter when I had additional time. Although, my ex-husband and I remained mostly amicable, our focus was never wavering from the well-being of our children. I would highly recommend this book and would purchase for someone in the early phases of divorce/uncoupling with children.

This is an updated version of Karen's orginal Co- Parenting handbook. This new version is even better and adds in more information regarding the separation period, both for the parents and the kids. I echo my remarks from my orginal review...If you have kids and are divorcing PLEASE read this book...I cannot recommend it highly enough. Karen Bonnell is a highly skilled co-parenting counselor and understands what a challenging time divorce can be for parents like no one else can. With this book, she walks the reader through the stages and transitions in an easily understandable way. It often seems unthinkable for angry/hurt parents to move through the place of pain for the benefit of the children but Karen's book shows it can be done.I especially enjoyed reading the chapter "New Partner's in your Children's Lives." Karen's frankness about attraction vs. Love and information on brain chemistry is something a lot of people might not hear otherwise. There are multiple helpful kernels in this chapter!I admire Karen's work greatly and wish every counselor/therapist/attorney would make this book required reading for their divorcing clients.As a grown up child of divorce, with parents who had no co-parenting skills, I can tell you from personal experience that if the parents do not learn to co-parent your children's lives will forever be altered. I wish this "manual" on co-parenting was written much sooner!I wish there was a book like this when my parents divorced.

As a Mom, Step-mom, Divorce Attorney, Guardian ad Litem and co-parent, this book is a must for everyone and I mean everyone involved with parents and children of divorce. This updated version offers some amazing information on brain chemistry too which is a big plus. Karen's insight and expertise in this area is unsurpassed. She is my "go to co-parent coach" for the toughest situations. This book allows everyone to have Karen by their side as they navigate the co-parenting. I laughed out loud at some of the experiences Gerry and his family lived through. It is obvious to me Gerry holds the island of Corfu and its residents in deep respect and affection.Reading this series has educated me in how expatriates deal with the local economy and the residents. I learned a little about local customs and traditions. I look forward to reading the final installment in this pleasant series.

I discovered this little jewel of a book years ago. I read it and passed it on to my sons, who loved it.It is a wonderful portrait of an English family making a new life on the island of Corfu`. The best line comes from Spiro, the factotum of the Island, who writes: "War (2nd World War) has been declared. Don't tell a soul!"

What a charming trilogy! The first of the books is my favorite, as the latter two simply revisit the story line, but in greater detail and touching on a few more obscure stories. I was transported to the island of Corfu by the author's lovely writing style and attention to detail. As a naturalist, his love of "all creatures great and small" shines through. It also had a good deal of very clever humor and is simply a truly enjoyable read. Highly recommended.

I have been watching the series on PBS and thought the books would be fun to read. For me personally they are very dry. I wish I had just bought the first one to try out and not the whole series.

Since My Family and Other Animals is my favorite book of all time, this is just as fun. Watching this young child's interest in science and animals grow amidst his hysterically funny family dynamic is a great diversion for the times. There is another one to get later.

I love these books! The fact that they are non-fiction makes them better. His descriptions of the island and his family bring you right there with him. He truly gets excited finding a new critter! There is a little bit of me in these books.

I know this author well so, while I haven't read it yet I know I shall like it. I have read the first of his trilogy "My Family & Other Animals" and it was delightful. These types of books and authors, however, aren't easily found in Chapters/Indigo etc. so I turn to Amazon... they are great, especially for books - good prices and excellent, prompt delivery.

This is an enchanting trilogy telling some of the childhood stories of Jerry Durrell's human and animal families. It is in part, hysterically funny and in part pointedly educational in his descriptions of how he integrated the animal world into the human world.

Long time fan of the Empire Flippers and when I saw the Kindle book I figured I had to check it out. Even with over 15 years of experience in many of the ways they outlined in the book, I picked up a few nuggets of wisdom from the experts. Not only that, but it gave me insights on what to think about when either being a buyer or a seller of the various business models you can chose. One really good one was for book authors (like many here on the Kindle platform reading this very review) - that if you are building up books to later sell as a business, you had better make a new KDP account under an email address that you are willing to part ways with. Well now, in order for me to keep ownership of this very review here, seems I need to look into making a new KDP account - thanks Greg and the Empire Flippers crew for always keeping things real and putting out a great amount of knowledge and information for essentially FREE.So to recap, this is a great book if you’re just starting out (as well as what to think about if you plan to sell the business) but also a fun refresher for some old guy like me who wants to make sure they’re not forgetting anything, get perspective, and pick up a nugget or two that they may have missed on the journey.
