The Commercial Society: Foundations and Challenges in a Global Age: Foundations and Challenges in a Global Age (Studies in Ethics and Economics), by Samuel Gregg

Review

The Commercial Society is one of those books which reminds us that commerce, trade, and free economies are deeply rooted in foundations that we tend to take for granted - until they disintegrate or are taken away. Gregg's message of commercial humanism is truly inspiring, and his warnings about its fragility bear repeating. (Robert A. Sirico, President, Acton Institute)So much of Latin America continues to suffer the ravages of mercantile, neo-corporatist attitudes, policies, and institutions. Unless there is an systematic embrace of the type of moral, legal, and economic order described in Gregg's Commercial Society, populism will become the norm, corruption will continue to flourish, and untold millions who yearn only to express their economic creativity will continue to live in sub-human conditions. A well-written, easy to comprehend text that does not shy away from explaining complex issues. (Ricardo Crespo, Universidad Austral, Argentina)Gregg has contributed a major work to the growing literature in the field of the commerical society and its relationship to ethical and cultural foundations. (Ethics and Economics)An excellent study of economic liberty, its essential prerequisites, and its greatest challenges today. Everyone can learn something from this, especially those Europeans whose countries are mired in bureaucracy, stagnation, and what Tocqueville called "soft despotism." (Mart Laar, Former Prime Minister of Estoria)

Simply superb.

Gregg has written an excellent book. This book, in it essence, is a very lucid scholarly, accurate historical-conceptual study of the causal correlations between the commercial society and what Gregg calls its "foundations", meaning the conditions that favor the commercial society. These include moral foundations (e.g., creativity, practical wisdom, trust, civility), economic foundations and legal-political foundations. But to read this book merely as a descriptive study is to miss the more important prescriptive thesis, which is that we ought to encourage and promote the commercial society. Beware, again of missing the important prescriptive thesis if one reads in Gregg merely the suggestion that an appropriate culture supporting these foundations( which intellectuals have a role to shape) needs to be defended and encouraged *in order to* have a commercial society. Rather the equally interesting, if not more interesting proposal, is that one might promote the commercial society *in order to* promote those desirable moral, economic and legal political foundations, which have themselves independent value, and which constitute a culture of civility. So what turned out originally to be means for the sake of the end (i.e., the commercial society) are now proposed as the ends worth seeking via the establishment of the commercial society. Gregg does not harbour pie-in-the-sky illusions: there remains many fine-tuning to be done, and he is alert to these, as seen in his careful qualifications. But this strategy for promoting the culture of civility, if I may, by way of the commercial society needs to be explored, since the causal correlative connections are much in evidence. In inviting us to think this way, Gregg is offering us an example of what Herbert Simon (Nobel Prize in economics, 1978) calls goaless designing (The Sciences of the Artificial, 1983), which he recommends as a fully rational and creative way of designing and engineering society. One seeks a solution (A) for a certain problem (B), but along the way, one discovers that the solution (B) itself is a desirable end, and one can reasonably pursue that (B) instead as the end of the design. Social planning, which aims to improve society, can certainly develop in this way, and the social planner or designer has to be alert, like an entrepreneur, to possibilities, consequences and hence opportunities that result from his solution, and to consider if the solution and the consequences might not itself be worth seeking, and not merely valuable instrumentally. If it is independently valuable, then it might in fact be sought after as the end goal, and what formerly was the end may now be sought instrumentally for the sake of the new end goal, to the extent that there is evidence that they mutually support each other. Gregg's The Commercial Society is just one such kind of design solution for improving the society. Thus it constantly invites us not merely to consider defending the foundations and civil cultures for the sake of the commercial society, but rather that we might consider crafting and engineering the commercial society for the sake of such a civil culture. Gregg pursues here, one might add, a way of thinking found in Michael Novak's works where he invites us to consider the way commercial society requires (and hence promotes) human creativity, which then can be ordered towards imaging God's own creativity. Whether one fully agrees with Gregg or not, one will have to take this work seriously. This is a fine text to challenge policy thinking that many times is senselessly linear and uncreative. Gregg was awarded the very prestigious Culture of Enterprise Award for this book. I am not at all suprised.

Drawing upon ancient and modern sources, "The Commercial Society" is one of those books that remind us that commercial order is about much more than the market economy. Using clear language free of jargon, this prize-winning book (Templeton Enterprise Award 2007) identifies the central moral, legal, and economic foundations of market orders and illustrates why they are indispensable to any society that aspires to the title of free and civilized. Many have been waiting for such a book for a long time. Not since reading Wilhelm Ropke have I come across a book that articulates such a strong and morally-convincing case for free societies shaped decisively by the dominance of free enterprise and markets, but in a way that escapes the mathematical justifications offered by most contemporary economists. It is difficult to classify this book as "conservative" or "classical liberal", not least because the author utilizes sources from both traditions, such as Edmund Burke, Adam Smith, Friedrich von Hayek, and Alexis de Tocqueville. It is, in short, a book grounded firmly in various strands of the Western tradition, especially that synthesized in the Scottish Enlightenment, but prefigured by a number of late-medieval and early-modern thinkers, such as Thomas Aquinas. It is refreshing to read a text that is so unambiguously committed to authentic human liberty, but which cannot be boxed so easily in any one intellectual paradigm. Those inclined to planned economies or socialism will find this book very challenging to their core beliefs. "The Commercial Society", however, does not seek to persuade by hectoring. Nor does it suggest that commercial order contains all the answers to humanity's questions and problems. Rather, it expresses its arguments through logic, by carefully marshaling the facts, and judiciously surveying history. The book closes with a sophisticated discussion of the possibility of building commercial orders as opposed to simply letting them evolve. It is one of the most intriguing discussions I have read of a problem that has puzzled thinkers such as Smith, Montesquieu and Tocqueville - this alone makes the book worth reading.

It's funny how people criticize this book as being hateful. I've read Martin Ling's biography on Muhammad, that one won the best biography on Muhammad's life in English in Islamabad. It has the same violent and controversial content. Why? Because both books are based on the same exact sources. Aisha is 6 when Muhammad marries her, he's way, way older, and the Battle of the Trench and the beheading of hundreds of Jews at Muhammad's command, all there, in both books. But because Robert Spencer is not Muslim and is trying to show how there is violence rooted in Muhammad's life the facts now become Islamophobic? And Martin Lings gets an award? If you try to attack the content of this book, you are attacking the holy books of Islam, because that's where Robert Spencer gets it all. Yes, he's not a Muslim. Yes, it's probably uncomfortable having to admit all the things Muhammad did and said in his life. In a time when it's dangerous to speak out about issues like these, I'd say Robert Spencer deserves a medal. Read this book. It might just open your mind, unless of course, you're close-minded and intolerant of free speech and the truth.

Finally a book that address all the issues of Islam from Mohammad's own history. Tried to submit an earlier review saying this should be required reading by all elected officials and government representatives but that review has gone missing I guess. Maybe this one will be posted, I don't know, but if anyone actually wants to know the truth of what we are facing, they need to read this book. For those wondering if I have read the Qu'ran, I have and that is why this book was so meaningful. It explained much of what I read and the circumstances under which it was written. And all of the information is based upon the writings and edicts of those who are practicing Islamist's.

Exposing the truth about mohammed and the koran hopefully will save us from the evil of islam and the islamists if enough people open their eyes. Unfortunately too many folks still suffer from the impression that islam is just a major world religion rather than a feeble attempt to create one by copying the sacred stories from the Talmud and Gospels and trying to create a book that justifies Mohammed's evil actions. This book exposes all the vile nastiness that is islam's founder.

This is a fascinating book that is not politically correct but very likely. It contains a frank discussion with respect to the life and times of Muhammad and how what is being done in his name around the world by his followers is a good reflection of what he did and how he lived. Jihad against all who do not convert to Islam. Take no prisoners. Complete disrespect for women who have no rights whatsoever in Muslim theology and so on. A religion based on following the example of Muhammad is not a peace loving one. The desire that Israel and the Jews be wiped off the map is based on the words and deeds of Muhammad as recorded by his followers as documented in this book. Those who have any desire to preserve western culture as we know it should become familiar with the contents of Mr. Spencer's book and be guided accordingly

I've always believe that if you are going to communicate with another culture or religious group you need to understand their point of view. After living in a couple of Muslim countries, and trying to read the Quran, this book puts a lot of things into perspective. Everything in this book rings true, and explains a lot from my experiences with Muslims. This book is well worth reading. If you only know about Islam from listening to the news this book will be an eye opener...

His family was affected by being exiled by the Ottoman Turks in his Grandfather's day. I like the fact that, though he is critical of Islam, he is honest about it and uses only Islamic sources and biographies and hadiths which are approved by Islamic leaders. They are critical of him because they do not like or accept the conclusions he has logically come to relating to the ideology and political system (Sharia) and its potential effect on Western culture and clash with US laws.

I follow Mr. Robert Spencer on a daily basis. Mr. Spencer's book regarding Mohammed does not take a psychological approach however, reading between the lines it is clear the man was merely a war monger and desperate to gain power by any means necessary including inventing Angels. This book also confirms from classic Koranic verses Muhammed was indeed vertically challenged!

Thanks Robert ....all your books are enlightening, accurate, truthful, and verifiable. I've check and double checked the various translations of the Qur'an including the classics holy books. I've read and re-read the translation's by Abdullah Yusuf Ali, Marmaduke Pickethall, and Mohammad Habib Shakir. Without getting deeply involved with explaining what you have explained in your book... it is true....Islam is violent, vindictive, and not tolerant of Jews, Christians,or any other belief system....Sadly, it is leading 1.5 Billion humans on a prevaricated journey to nowhere. If you doubt this then take the arduous Journey yourself and read the Qur'an.... it will startle and scare you with its Hate and Violence....

I have read them all. This is the one. This is the book that will open some doors for you. I am a regular education teacher. I finally got tired of wasting my time at pointless (for the students) IEP meetings. It didn't matter which school district I worked for; the district's objective was to thwart the parents from getting appropriate services for their student. I saw student after student turn into a despondent mess, wreaking havoc as a teen, eventually dropping out and becoming a burden to our community. What little money was saved by the school district, which is mandated to spend that money on those kids, was spent at least ten times over by law enforcement or community welfare departments later down the road. This book is my bible for getting services for my special needs students.

This book offers a systematic approach to obtaining, tracking, and evaluating information about your child's education history, needs, and school assessments. It also includes relevant law, and a discussion about the national culture of school systems that highlights the fact that the schools are not designed for kids with learning differences or special needs. Parents don't need to take school ignorance or indifference personally - it's a waste of energy to go down that path when you realize it is not about you or your child - but is a part of the pervasive beliefs embedded in national education culture that everyone should learn the same way, and anyone who doesn't is a bad person, etc. Putting aside the fear, blame, anxiety, and resentment frees up mental real estate that can be better used for taking measured, methodical action steps - an inexorable force (your applied will to get your child an education) meets an immovable object (schools that don't care, don't know how to help, and/or don't have the resources, and/or view you and your child as inherently evil wombats). In my opinion, the book is an essential resource - very critical to understanding how to get support for your child. My caveat there is that I'm not sure that1) even with the best intentions and execution it is possible to get blood from a stone, even if that stone is legally obligated to provide blood; (by the time this is accomplished, the child will have flunked out of school and deteriorated past the point of retrieval?)2) as an adult with ADHD, I found the information extremely challenging to wade through. It took me eight hours just to read the first 20% of the book, much of which triggered me emotionally, and was hard to understand. I am a forest-first-then-trees learner. It's easier for me to learn if I can see the context first, the big picture. This book is organized for people who learn best when information is presented in a piecemeal sequence - who are able to assemble the pieces themselves and understand intuitively what those pieces add up to. It would have been easier for me to use the book if there were an overview of the entire process at the beginning. There is not. It was extremely painful and difficult for me to wade through this book. It took months to get through - not days, not weeks - months. There has to be a faster, easier way. Despite the fact that CHADD recommends this book, it is not, in my experience, even remotely ADHD-friendly. If you have a different learning style, or if you do not have ADHD, you will probably find it extremely useful, well written, and well organized.I highly recommend this book for its content and the ways it can contribute to your sanity as you attempt to navigate a frustrating process through an indifferent or even hostile system, but not for its structure or presentation.

Consider this one of my most valuable books along with the whole Wrightslaw collection. As a parent of a child with autism, this was were I got my start. I am now a professional advocate for special education and work with Attorneys' of which we all use Wrightslaw. These are great books whether you are novice or a seasoned veteran. A must have for your person library!

This book has been so helpful in preparing me for transitioning my daughter into preschool. It is very accessible and so easy to understand - you don't need to be a scholar or a lawyer to understand your child's special education rights!A lot of the information pertains to older school age children, obtaining evaluations and using existing test scores to help you down the path of special education, but i still found a lot within these pages that applies to my toddler who is transitioning out of state-provided autism therapy and into a public preschool.Another nice feature is the 'homework assignments' and how-to information on organizing your child's files, understanding test scores and statistics, and creating a master plan for your child's education. It's homework that you'll want to do!

There is a lot of things in this book that really resonated with me and helped me become both a better advocate. One was the approach to organizing and reviewing materials in order to be better prepared for IEP and IEE meetings. Another was the evaluation of testing data to determine whether real progress was being made. ln that case, I learned a lot about the tests in general and where gaps may have occurred in my child's education. The section on negotiation strategies also proved helpful to me and I'm sure the letter writing section will be something I will need at some point. This book is full of homework for you, so you don't sit down and read it cover to cover. But, if you do the work, you are going to be a much better advocate. The legal experience of the Wrights is invaluable, and they are sharing it with us for a very reasonable amount. While I didn't need many sections of the book, I'm certain there are others out there who do and I hope they are as helpful as the ones I've completed.
