Arrived from the UK quickly and it was in good condition. Recipes seem clear and concise...they are metric measures so be prepared with a scale that has grams and measuring cups and spoons with metric measures. Also be aware to any American bakers who have not lived elsewhere... Do not assume all ingredients are the same. Examples self -rising flour in the UK is not the same as in the USA. US Self rising flour has salt, the UK one does not. Strong flour is bread flour and caster sugar is bartender's or bakers sugar. Treacle is Molasses, but Golden syrup is NOT corn syrup. Icing sugar is powdered sugar...when in doubt look it up....have fun baking

I enjoy watching the British Baking Show on TV and decided to order a couple of the books. Being used, this thick book was a great value. The print is a little smaller than I expected, and of course, the measurements are metric, but I can cope with that and am glad I enjoy reading the history of the recipes and am glad I purchased it.

Recipes that work - check!Beautifully printed - check!Gorgeous photos - check!I adore this cookbook!

I had tried to buy this book some time ago, but it was not available so I bought the ebook version. I really was not happy with that, so when I found this I ordered it right away. The book is in great condition so I am very happy to have it.

One of the best British baking books I've found here in the states. Some great recipes even if you don't watch the show.

I look this baking cookbook! Better have a kitchen scale to use it, but it is full of good stuff!!

LOVE these recipes !! exactly what I wanted and was looking for !!!

Nice cookbook purchased as "used" with lots of great recipes. The text with the histories of various baked items was interesting.

Courage:God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference.Reinhold NiebuhrDemakis, Joseph. The Ultimate Book of Quotations (p. 64). Unknown. Kindle Edition.BLUSH FACTOR No worries here. In fact, this is a short narrative that SHOULD be read to your eight-year-old son/daughter or 80-year-old grandparent.I nearly passed on this short work of nonfiction, based on the first review of it, that it was dry. However, having spent some fifteen years of my life living and working in the Middle East, I decided it was too enticing a story for a mere two bucks.Dry? Perhaps, but more nonfiction can be described thusly, I suppose. Otherwise, this is a fascinating insight into the courage demonstrated by some women and their resolve to dedicate their lives to freeing themselves and their neighbors from the enslavement by invaders proclaiming themselves to be the saviors working to bring the end of humanity for their God.Wonderful insight. I shudder in shock and awe, wondering how many American women (or men, as well) would undertake the burdens these folks did. Bearing in mind the society in which they lived, that (as Westerners might view it) that so persecuted the women already. I realize that bit will be confusing, but, throughout the Middle East, women and girls have few rights and a great number of obstacles that keeps them handicapped against rising through their glass ceilings that few Americans can understand just how improbable it is that women such as Sabrine could find a way to covertly assist outside forces in vanquishing ISIS within Tikrit and elsewhere.I guess it all comes down to mankind's determination to seek liberty, justice, freedom and happiness. The Widow's Network is a wonderful, if all too brief, narrative that cuts through the political half-truths and propaganda so pervasive in present-day discussion.BOTTOM LINEFive stars out of five.

i don't give 5 stars very often but i will say i was unaware of this subject matter before reading this. very compelling...

Is a former Soldier I found this book very interesting it would be nice to know more about the Iraqi civilians and their lives and who helped and why and when. I am sure there must have been many many more people who helped out the Americans as we tried to help them.

Good book. I learned a lot!

Well reported piece on a subject I knew nothing about.

A fascinating subject...

The Widow’s Network by Nick McDonell might be an eye-opening book for readers that believe armed conflicts are between two monolithic elements, that there is a good side and a bad side. Using a small core of named individuals that worked with female spy Sabrine, McDonell delivers a well-sourced account of the conflict in Iraq. There are shifting alliances, people who worked openly for more than one side, and some documented facts with flexible dates to serve bureaucratic purposes.I cannot find the fact of shifting loyalties surprising. It seems logical to me that allegiance to tribal and family loyalties would always win out over loyalty to more broad-based entities engaged in a struggle with doubtful outcomes. This was true in Vietnam where US troops were directed not to give rides to our South Vietnam comrades, as 20% were followers of the enemy. In this short Amazon Original presentation, Investigative Reporter Nick McDonell visits Tikrit in 2016. While visiting a family who described to him the loss of nine children, McDonell met Sabrine, a lady who would give him several follow up interviews in which she would describe her work for intelligence agencies fighting ISIS. Sabrine was able to get a lot of information from her husband, an ISIS fighter she was forced to marry.Sabrine had a tough life even before experiencing war. At the age of twenty, it seemed she was forced to marry. Within a year she had a child and a divorce. She furthered her image of a strongly opinionated person when she left her father to live with a sister. Possibly from her own experience at court with her divorce, she became a “court junkie.” Through a lawyer she found inspiring, she was introduced to Wahida, who made her a member of her personal clique although not a member of the special forces group Wahida traveled with. Wahida, Sabrine and others formed a group for the exchange of communications that would support the US and Iraqi airstrikes on ISIS facilities.I found this account very balanced. It would be easy for a male reporter to fall in lust with his female source. McDonell recounts that Sabrine did attempt a relationship with his interpreter, although not with him. McDonell also does not shy away from the negatives in Sabrine’s past. Again, I am empathetic. How can we know how we will act when surrounded by combat and death not only daily but for an extended period? US combat soldiers serve tours of duty and many see terrible things during their tours. Sabrine and her colleagues live in the war zone and see terrible things all their lives.McDonell brings up ethical questions. How do the dates on documents dealing with factual airstrikes and reports of damage change from time to time? And McDonell gets into the philosophical questions. If I can kill two very bad ISIS folks but sixty civilians die with them, is it a fair trade? There is a lot of thought-provoking thought in this short presentation. It is worth much more than the *Free* I paid for it. I give this four Amazon stars for the strength of its bibliography.

Interesting read. I need to read again.

Review

"Finding Calcutta is an intriguing journey of faith and insight as Mary Poplin discovers how to integrate her newfound faith into her well entrenched academic world. Her forthright approach is refreshingly honest without becoming an expose. Her practical understanding of Mother Theresa's faith and resultant purpose would be appreciated by Mother Theresa herself for the glory brought to God." (Lisa R. Roberts, Dharma Deepika, January-June 2010)"Finding Calcutta is inspirational." (James A. Cox, The Midwest Book Review, January 2009)"Finding Calcutta is a must read for anyone interested in learning more about Mother Teresa and the Missionaries of Charity in Calcutta and understanding the dynamics behind their work and service." (Tricia C., Book Bargains and Previews (www.bookbargainsandpreviews.com), November 2008)"While on one level, Finding Calcutta is a reflection of one woman's interaction with Mother Teresa and the Sisters of Charity, it is also a deeper call to the readers to discover their own 'Calcutta' and to live there with the same measure of abandon. The simplicity and focus of the sisters in Finding Calcutta helped me acknowledge that the small ways I move toward offering my life (even addressing those darn shopping addictions) can be as 'beautiful for God' as an irresistible revolution." (The Link Between (www.thelinkbetween.wordpress.com), November 19, 2008)

Review

"A profound journey of the heart, head and hands in which Mary Poplin discovers her own 'Calcutta'--the classroom with its students in whom seeds of life must be sown for the life of the world to come." (Kelly Monroe Kullberg, founder, The Veritas Forum, and author of Finding God Beyond Harvard: The Quest for Veritas)"Mary Poplin's pilgrimage of discovering Christ among the most vulnerable of the world's poor is an accessible and inspiring invitation to us all. Her honesty, thoughtfulness and reflections are an important provocation for those who find their realities separated from our sisters and brothers who suffer today. Mary does an excellent job of building the bridges between the insulated and isolated lack of experience of poverty in academia and the oppression and injustice on the streets of one of the world's poorest cities. Her interactions and stories of Mother Teresa and the Missionaries of Charity are a true glimpse of grace and a sweet reminder that God is with and among those who suffer most. Honest, thoughtful and reflective, Finding Calcutta will challenge you to love more freely where you find yourself." (Christopher L. Heuertz, international director, Word Made Flesh, and author of Simple Spirituality: Learning to See God in a Broken World)"Mary Poplin's spiritually nurturing account of her experiences with the Missionaries of Charity in Calcutta is a loving portrait of a true work of God. In these pages readers encounter Mother Teresa's deep spiritual wisdom as a call to reflection, repentance and a renewed concern for 'the poorest of the poor' as bearers of Christ's image. There is spiritual refreshment here for believer and doubter alike." (James A. Herrick, Guy Vander Jagt Professor of Communication, Hope College, author of The Making of the New Spirituality and Scientific Mythologies)"Mary Poplin found her first Calcutta in India as she volunteered in Mother Teresa's ministry to the poorest of the poor. She found her second Calcutta in her own university as she returned to recognize that the poorest of the poor are not always those with no material wealth but those with no knowledge of God and nowhere to find it. The story of her transformed spiritual life segues beautifully into the story of her transformed academic life. An exciting book of great wisdom." (James W. Sire, author of The Universe Next Door and Habits of the Mind)"In this poignant, elegant, humble memoir, Poplin gives us far more than Mother Teresa or even another Mother Teresa story. She gives us instead the Jesus and the Christianity that operated through Mother Teresa. Poplin's experience of finding Calcutta irrevocably changed her soul. It will change yours as well." (Phyllis Tickle, former religion editor, Publishers Weekly, and compiler of The Divine Hours)"If you've ever wondered what it would be like to be a worldly California academic curious enough to volunteer in Mother Teresa's Calcutta Mission, prepare to be surprised. After struggling to translate her experience there for a secular audience, Dr. Poplin has ended by translating her readers into Mother Teresa's own unfamiliar, spiritual dimension. Watch out--you will not be able to keep from meditating." (C. John Sommerville, author of The Decline of the Secular University)"Having been the spiritual director of the Missionaries of Charity in Asia for many years, I read Mary Poplin's book with keen interest and fond memories of these remarkable women. Finding Calcutta is a love story between God and two women, Mother Teresa and the author. In describing her encounter and the lessons learned with 'God's pencil,' Mary Poplin has penned 'something beautiful for God.' This book not only captures the spirituality of Mother Teresa and her sisters but also reminds us of an important principle in spiritual formation that God taught its author: our own Calcutta is most often right smack where we are." (Albert Haase, O.F.M., director, School of Spirituality at Mayslake Ministries, and author of Coming Home to Your True Self: Leaving the Emptiness of False Attractions)"Mary Poplin seeks to integrate her experience with Mother Teresa into her work and life and to come together with others who hunger and thirst. This book can be a platform to gather those of us so disposed so that the flame is not lost and will continue to produce abundant fruit, fruits of eternal life." (Father Angelo Devananda Scolozzi, U.F.W., Centro de Espiritualidad Madre Teresa, Chihuahua, Mexico)"Mary Poplin takes us on a pilgrimage toward clarity about who we are and what our life amounts to. The pilgrimage is simultaneously through Calcutta and through the heart of the 'sophisticated' dynamics of university life in America. As it proceeds we gain a better understanding of the social forces that govern the university in the name of intellect--but falsely so. It will be of special help to those engaged in academic life, at whatever level. They will find here a guide who has been grasped by God and enabled to see that life and the surrounding cultural world for what they really are, and what under God they could be." (Dallas Willard, professor of philosophy, University of Southern California, and author of The Divine Conspiracy and Hearing God)

I was challenged by an agnostic relative of mine about Mother Teresa's faith, at a time when I did not know much about her. In my extensive reading about her I was recommended this book by my dear friend, Dr. Scott Key, who knows Mary Poplin . After reading it I gave a copy of it to my relative, for him to see that not all well educated people think that believing in God is meaningless. If anything, this book shows how the God of the universe gives meaning to our lives and instills in us a very real hope for the future. This book is not about Mother Teresa as much as it is the story of Dr. Mary Poplins' life before and after coming to faith. Please read this book, if for no other reason than curiosity you will definitely not be disappointed.your brother in Christ,Albert R.

Finding Calcutta gave me the sense of joy that author Mary Poplin experienced as she lived and worked with Mother Teresa...and, in the process, found her own spiritual footings. Dr. Poplin "put me there" in Calcutta, a place that seemed horribly depressing until my reading of how this highly qualified scholar's service to others lifted her spirits and set right her heart. My favorite passage is this section of her personal journey: "Now I can see how the radical feminist literature with which I was once enthralled is so contradictory. How can such intellectuals profess that women are more caring than men, yet simultaneously advocate vociferously for abortion?" Dr. Poplin goes on to express her new attitudes with amazing transparency about her previous life choices.Simply put: This book is powerful and changed my life.

Mary Poplin, the author has done an exceptional job of presenting the material in this book. After trotting the well worn road of counter culture she has come full circle to embrace Christianity. She had the privilege of spending 2 months as a volunteer in Calcutta working with The Missionaries of Charity. There is no lack of information about Mother Teresa, however, through the eyes of a new Christian, Poplinfinds a depth and spirituality I have not previously read. The inside look at Mother Teresa's world is fascinating. But this book is much more. Poplin, a professor, came to the shocking realization that her courses remained secular. We share many of the author's truths as her faith grows. Two chapters were outstanding, Mother Teresa's Dark Night of the Spirit and the Humor of Mother Teresa. It is impossible to read this book and not be inspired by thenun's dedication and work ethic.

Don't let the cover fool you. It's not about Mother Theresa. Instead it's the story of a Professor of Education at Claremont Graduate School and her turn from a life of New Age, marijuana, affairs and abortions to a life of service and her own "Calcutta", that of reintroducing the university world to Christ. She uses a 6 week sabbatical working with Mother Theresa's Missionaries of Charity to frame her story. This book came at a good time in my life. I had become more and more agitated with too many conversations with too many people in my church life and had picked up a critical spirit, then I read her words: "Criticism is nothing less than dressed up pride". I had also taken on too many things and they all crashed on me at once, then I read: We ought not be weary of doing little things for the Love of God, who regards not the greatness of the work, but by the love with which it is performed".Even the appendix is interesting as as the author discusses the complete secularization of our university system, much to our country's great loss. This book was given to me by my daughter who said it was one of the best books she had read in several years. It caught me at a good time, as they say, and I found it so helpful to me that I purchased a copy for myself and gave it to another person.I'm not sure how a person newly introduced to the Christian Faith would grasp this book but for those in the race but getting weary, this is a great read. I know it greatly revitalized my faith this spring.

Inspiring, challenging and thought provoking. I had to read a section and reflect on it for several days. I'm one also searching for my Calcutta. I so appreciate how she puts into words the thoughts I have had about the universities and current world views. Also how America has turned her back on the foundation that has made it great. Once we remove our Christian values we have just a mess of a country a lot like all the rest. It is God (Jesus) and His principles that has made us a great nation and a Blessed people.

i couldn't put this book down! I was fascinating by the author's journey on many levels and am so grateful that she has written about it for those of us who are fellow travelers.

Great book. Informative and inspiring. Mother Theresa was a true Saint living in modern times. Particularly interesting is the author's discussions of her personal metamorphosis from sceptical atheist academic to committed believer. The great Christian author, C.S. Lewis once noted that there is significant overlap among the world's religions (and I would add modern secularism) on ethics - i.e., how we are supposed to live in this world. The sharp difference among religions is in another area - soteriology, or how to connect to God and get the spiritual power to live the prescribed life. I can think of no greater example than Mother Theresa of the spiritual power to live an extraordinary life of service, love and healing that is available through faith in Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit.

An Incredible read! Bought it to read about the prayer life of her organization. It is changing my life. Many colleges and universities are actively teaching all sorts of false religions and have boldly rejected Christianity. The book addresses that issue. It also needs to be changed. Mother Teresa and her team have been a wonderful blessing to our dark world. People who reject Christianity should read with an open mind and learn what it is that Christianity is all about.
