I bought this with my kids in mind who I want to have some rudimentary understanding of classical Greek culture. It covered the basic plot points of Homer's Odyssey. I only wish it covered the Odyssey in more detail.

I teach students with learning disabilities. Some of my students struggle with reading, but are required to complete the same curriculum as their peers. This graphic novel is very helpful for students studying The Odyssey. The comic book style, colorful illustrations, and understandable text made it very appealing to my students. There is also a short index in the back that is helpful. I highly recommend this book!

I enjoyed this one, although Odysseus' story is enjoyable in any format. I hope this collection of Graphic Legends includes his arrival at Ithaca and his reclaiming of the throne. It is a story of courage, but it also has all the elements that we often find in the original Greek myths.

One of my very favorite authors. Can't go wrong with any of his books. This one is perfect for newborn to toddler. I have to add to this review that I wrote months ago. My grandson is now 10 months old. Out of the many wonderful books I've given him, this remains his number one favorite. I've read it to him almost daily since he was only a few months old along with other books. He sits in awe as we turn each page. He taps the page and now talks to each character. He has his favorites and smiles when we come to those pages. I already knew Bill Martin, Jr. was a special author for children and Ted Rand's illustrations are perfecr for his stories. So I don't hesitate to purchase his books. I didn't know that this book would be my grandson's favorite.

One of my favorite books for little children. I heard about this book almost 30 years ago when my son was a baby. I bought it then and read it to him so many times the book nearly wore out. "Here are my hands for catching and throwing...here is my head for thinking and knowing"... not only does it teach kids the parts of their bodies it ends with a big hug. I love this book so much I am now buying for the next generation of kids in my family. This one's a keeper.

This book is good to read with toddlers or for beginning readers. Preschool through K or 1st grade can do activities based on this book as well.

What a sweet book for a toddler.

This is a great book for teaching toddlers body parts - "here are my hands for catching and throwing, here are my feet for coming and going". My little one absolutely loves it and asks for it over and over again. I, like one of the reviewers below, don't like some of the choices the author made such as "here are my ears for washing and drying". It would have been better to say something like "here are my ears for listening and hearing". Regardless, she loves it and it learning to point to all of her body parts with the book. In the end, it teaches her the following body parts which makes it very valuable: chin, elbow, arms, feet, hands, cheeks, eyes, ears, head, knees, teeth and nose.

If you're looking for a cocktail book to help you put together a great home bar and start mixing more advanced cocktails this is great but a large number of the recipes are impractical for most home bars. If you are a bartender or bar owner looking to up your skills or the level of complexity at your bar then this is really going to be helpful.What I like about the book:I like that this book covers everything: Bar equipment, ice, technique, history, tasting, some "story essays" about the bar, and very important for developing a home bar is that it goes through the different types of spirits and gives you explanations of the different types and specific recommendations for brands to buy. This is step one of what is needed to be a great home bartender.What I don't like about the book:The recipes are a reflection of the Death and Co bar, where expert mixologists are creating very interesting and complex drinks. However this just doesn't work very well for a home bar. A large percentage of the recipes require something such as "Grapefruit infused Punt E Mes." The book gives you instructions on how to make all of these complex ingredients, but they aren't practical for a home bar. Therefore almost 90% of the recipes are pretty useless for me.The index isn't great. An index is supposed to reference every instance of a word in the book. So you should be able to look up "St. Germain" and it should give you every page where there is a recipe including St. Germain, but the book doesn't have this. For example in the section of the book on Modifier Liquors it describes St. Germain as "bar tenders katsup" because it has been used so much in so many drinks. I went ahead and bought a bottle but I have yet to find a recipe in the book I can make. There is no way to look for recipes using it other than to go one by one through the whole book, and when I have found one that uses it, the recipe contains one or more other complex ingredients that I don't have.Definitely a very good book and I've learned very much from it, but it is far from an ideal resource for a home bar enthusiast.

I've never been inspired to write an amazon review, but WOW. This book is AMAZING. I own a few cocktail books and I've thumbed through countless others, but I've never come across such an incredible tome.The Death & Co cocktail book is elegant, simple, and clear. The instructions are thorough. The recipes don't all rely on expensive, obscure liquors. And there's a great appendix for making infusions and other in-house delights. Bonus, the photos are beautiful! I couldn't ask for anything more.

I bought this book on recommendation from a favorite bartender. It's one of the better-value kitchen books I own: long, super dense, and cloth-bound, with high-quality photos and drawings. It's part instructions (how to properly shake and stir, how to taste spirits, what types of ingredients go well together, how to form intuition for the right amount of sweet vs. sour), part recipes, and part memoir / vignettes from the NYC bar. It's pretty impressive how erudite these guys are; they write with convincing authority, and the kind of mastery that makes the book feel like an aspiration that you know you will never fully achieve, but that you can keep turning to again and again to learn more.It gets five stars because I use it all the time and find it a fount of random wisdom and interesting asides, but I should note a few things:- There are no vodka recipes...they think vodka is boring.- Many of the drink recipes require obscure ingredients or expensive liquors, so the actual number of recipes I've made from this book so far is kind of small (limited to their "classic cocktails" section). However, this gives one plenty of room to grow and makes it possible for the book to appeal to all kinds of mixologists, from casual to more serious.- I'm sometimes frustrated by the lack of an index to their recipes, e.g. say I want to find all the recipes that include white (blanc) vermouth, well that isn't possible. I have to page through the various sections (Classic Cocktails, Gin Stirred, Gin Shaken, etc.) hoping to stumble upon this ingredient.

I've already read this book cover to cover (all but the recipes) twice now and will without a doubt say that there won't be another cocktail book that covers so many topics so well. It offers an interesting look into how the bar operates as well as essential techniques for making cocktails and inventing your own. I've already tried a few recipes out of the book and their margarita recipe killed my own, which I had considered my cocktail calling card for years. After reading the negative reviews, I would definitely recommend getting the Kindle version. There are a lot of recipes and the book is insanely well organized, but being able to search and use the hyperlinks is awesome. If you only buy one cocktail book in your entire life, this is the one to own.

What a book! I'm glad that the meat of the text is dedicated to guiding fundamentals and techniques. Equally useful was the many lists of essentials and recommendations for spirits and equipment. There are a couple of classic cocktails that didn't make the cut, but reading between the lines allowed me to make some judgements on how to elevate/modify other classics that aren't in the book. The original cocktails that are in here are numerous, straightforward, and innovative. I think that while there are certainly other great cocktail recipes out there on the internet or in other books, I think this book will be sufficient to inspire readers to look in their kitchens and in grocery/liquor stores and consider new combinations

My son loves all things Carle and this was another one he adored! It is a super cute story about a chameleon who wants to be other animals but who in the end just wants to be himseld. Great for toddlers!! My 4 year old loves it. He even likes a show on one of the streaming channels that has all the books read and this is his favorite on the show.

My 4 year old loves this book. Checking each page to see which new mixed up body part the chameleon gains is so much fun. We've read it a couple dozen times already and he still laughs like crazy each time. His other favorites are 'The Very Hungry Caterpillar' and 'Mr. Seahorse'. The Mixed up Chameleon is very in line with the other 2 but a little bit more of story than 'The Very Hungry Caterpillar'.

Each year, our daycare devotes a week (each) to two authors: Dr. Seuss and Eric Carle. I am always looking for books to add to my Eric Carle collection and found The Mixed Up Chameleon. The children in my class (3yo's.) LOVED this book. At first, they laughed at all the crazy, mixed up creatures the chameleon became. Then, somehow, they saw the message of the book. They would clap when he became himself again. Pretty neat for 3 year olds! This is a lovely story and I highly recommend it.

Good colorful book, but we didn't enjoy it as much as some of his others. Iwould suggest going to the library to look at it if you are interested then youwill know if it will appeal to your kids.

This is a beautiful book. The writing and artwork make it perfect for young kids. I even notice myself waiting to turn the page just to look at the pictures longer. My daughter enjoys it but its not one of our Go-To books. (Personal preference)

The theme of the story is awesome! I love the tabs to flip through the book, turning the page quickly for a 1-2 year old is vital to holding attention span.

I need to preface my review with two facts about myself… that made me want to read this book. First of all… I almost died during BRAIN-TUMOR-SURGERY fifteen years ago. I am a TOTALLY-BLESSED-GRATEFUL-BRAIN-TUMOR-SURVIVOR! Secondly… I played baseball my entire youth through young adulthood… and have remained a die-hard baseball fan my entire life. So when I heard about the storyline of this book... I was drawn to it. I have read literally hundreds upon hundreds of baseball books in my life… with many of them reviewed by me on Amazon. But that was not the driving force behind me buying this book. I obviously knew… and do know… what it feels like being the brain tumor patient facing the possibility of death… or in my mind… worse… the possibility of surviving and being a vegetable… but I wanted the chance to find out more about… how the people “around” the brain tumor patient/victim… reacted… and carried on around her. This was something when you’re the one being operated on and hopefully recovering… you can’t fully appreciate in detail… because you’re (if you’re blessed) too busy fighting to survive.A quick thumbnail sketch without a true spoiler… before I give my deeply seeded feelings after experiencing this story. The supposed protagonist is Rich Donnelly a big league baseball coach… who has four children… three boys… and one girl… my now “beloved” Amy. Amy died at nineteen-years-old from a brain tumor. The title… “The Chicken Runs at Midnight” was taken from a question Amy asked her Dad near the end of her ever-too-short-life… regarding his coaching style at third base. Anything on that particular item would be a spoiler… and you can learn more if you decide to read the book.Now… though the book is supposed to be Rich’s life story… I view the book as purely Amy’s wonderful short life… and as a byproduct you learn about her Father… who cheats on his wife and kids… who stops going to church… who starts drinking heavily… and try’s to put most of the blame for his deplorable loss of character and integrity on others. He blames Billy Martin… whom he terms as Mr. Chivas Regal… and other baseball men… for making him (in his mind) feel like he’ll lose his job in the big leagues if he doesn’t go out almost every night drinking and whoring around… despite the fact that he has a wife and four children at home. He blames subsequent managers on other teams for the same thing. He cheats with a girl sixteen years younger than him… and shacks up with her. And though Donnelly grew up very religious… he blames the baseball environment for making it too embarrassing… and possibly job threatening to be seen going to church.In addition the reader will learn in detail that Rich’s Father… abused him. NOT SEXUALLY… but mentally and physically. Rich carries over (as many do) some of these traits to his children. Poor Amy… the only girl in the family… so loves her Father… and only wants to please him… and he wouldn’t even let her participate in playing basketball with him and her brother in the driveway.Amy will steal your heart! What a beautiful gift G-d gave to mankind… though he took her too soon. She always wanted to be a teacher… and when she was a child she set up a classroom in their garage… and made her siblings and neighborhood kids attend class. She gave homework assignments… report cards… and sent notes home to students that needed to buckle up! One neighborhood mother complained her child brought home more disciplinary notes from Amy… than her child got from regular school. Her greatest joy for gifts on XMAS and birthdays… were things like blackboards and bulletin boards for her classroom in the garage.To further try to win favor with her Father… she started to play soccer on her own… and became one of the best in the area… she started to play basketball on her own and made the team… and then the tumor attacked. She loved baseball as a fan… and like the Father she was constantly trying to please… her favorite team was the Pittsburgh Pirates. When Donnelly became a coach for his childhood team… Amy and her brothers would spend some time each summer with their Dad (and later his new wife) and go to all the Pirate games. Amy being a girl… wasn’t allowed in the clubhouse so she stayed in the “green room” with the families… became a baby sitter for the players kids… and just like everywhere sweet… perky… tough… Amy went… she stole and owned everyone’s heart.There came a point after her Father destroyed the family with his wanton philandering… that Amy refused to talk to him. Eventually she slowly opened up to seeing him again… and would send him special little handwritten notes… which the author uses to great effect throughout the book.As Amy’s brain tumor spreads… and she continues fighting life’s toughest… unfair fight… her smiles get bigger… her heart gets sweeter… And I started to get sadder… and started to “miss” her. I found myself constantly going back to the pictures in the middle of the book… where you could see… sweet… effervescent… courageous… Amy… in every phase of her too short life.This book is truly Amy’s book… you don’t have to be a brain tumor survivor like me… to be touched deeply in your heart and soul… you’ll feel like you knew her… but just like everyone else… you’ll be sad you didn’t get to know her longer.G-d Bless you Amy!

I could not put this book down! I read it cover to cover over the holidays. The most inspiring, tragic yet touching, feel good book I've read since "The Pursuit of Happiness"! I'm a bit biased towards Rich Donnelly, having grown up in the early 90s in Pittsburgh. Being an avid baseball fan and him and Leyland's Pirates being the closest any Buccos fan was or will be to a World Series definitely brought back wonderful memories of my childhood watching those teams. Whilst those teams and the infamous "Sid Bream slide" are simply folklore now to my own son, reading what truly was going on behind the scenes with Rich's daughter makes those memories of my own all the more bittersweet. I literally got chills when I read the climax of the book in chapter 21...a book has never been able to do that for me! Truly remarkable story and definitely no coincidences in how all of this played out for the Donnelly family. OMG! I just realized, perhaps this was intentional by Rich or the author, Friend, but the book reaches its peak moment in chapter 21...Twenty-One...!!! That was the great Roberto Clemente's number! How appropriate that the most important, pivotal, touching, heartrending moment of this book occurs in the 21st chapter! Regardless if you are a Pirates fan or a baseball fan, this story will touch your soul and cast a new light on how you view the world... Nothing happens on accident... There is a purpose for everything! A great way and a great message to start the new year!!!

“The Chicken Runs at Midnight,” seems like an odd title until you read the story. Rich Donnelly takes you through his rough childhood to his career as a minor league player and manager. He also takes you through his major league career as a coach. They are all there: Ted Williams, Billy Martin, Bobby Valentine, Jim Leyland, Barry Bonds, Craig Counsell, Andy Van Slyke… An interesting story.

When our book club picked this book, at first I wasn't exactly thrilled. As a matter of fact, I wasn't sure I even wanted to read it! Of course I relented and read it. It was extremely good. I cried, I laughed, and I was amazed at the saying "- A Chicken Runs at Midnight!"

This book is so much more than just a baseball story. It's a story of the impact that a young girl had on so many people, especially her Dad. A great example of the influence that one person can have on so many people. C.R.A.M.

I heard about this story during a radio show and ordered the book shortly after. Reading this book made me feel as if I knew Rich Donnelly and his family and went through it all with them. Highly recommended

If this book doesn't inspire you to wanna make changes in your life, to give more of yourself, to love without condition...reread it, you missed the point

So many life lessons are taught through this story-how to live, die, how to treat people, love, laugh, cry, and so much more.
