Yikes! It’s almost October and you’re way, way behind on updating your Rolling 3-Year Strategic Plan. You do that right? Your team, your board, and key volunteers look ahead at least three years, and every fall, you update the plan by one year. Yes? So your plan for 2019-2021 is due soon.Warning! “Sameness isn’t strategy. It is a recipe for mediocrity.”That’s the cautionary wisdom from Playing to Win: How Strategy Really Works. They note: “Every industry has tools and practices that become widespread and generic. Some organizations define strategy as benchmarking against competition and then doing the same set of activities but more effectively. Sameness isn’t strategy. It is a recipe for mediocrity.”Which brings me to this resource, "Barna Trends 2018: What's New and What's Next at the Intersection of Faith and Culture," the annual update from the editorial team at Barna. In the S.W.O.T. section of your updated strategic plan, are you simply refreshing last year’s revision of the previous year’s inadequate research—or are you seriously addressing Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats with current trends, wisdom, and discernment?"Barna Trends 2018" will help!MEDIA TRENDS:• Only 6% of Americans say celebrities are a credible source for news.• What news outlets do we trust? TV news: 69%; local newspapers: 50%; national newspapers: 44%.• Podcasts are watched by 23% of Americans (Millennials: 42%, Gen X: 30%, Boomers: 10%, Elders: 5%).MOBILE PHONE TRENDS:• 70% of parents sleep with their phones, but only 10% say that social media is the last thing they do each night.• 62% of parents check their phone in the first hour of the day.• Of the above group, 74% are checking email first thing in the morning, 51% are reading or sending texts, 48% are on social media, and 36% are reading the news.WORLDVIEW TRENDS:• Only 17% of Christians who consider their faith important, and attend church regularly, actually have a “biblical worldview” (as defined by Barna).• 33% agree that if you do good—you will get good; and if you do bad—you will get bad.• 28% agree that all people pray to the same god or spirit—no matter what name they use for that spiritual being.• 23% agree that many religions can lead to eternal life; there is no “one true” religion. Of that group, Millennials and Gen X agree with that view more than others.HOW WOULD YOU GIVE $100?• 64% would give $100 to a domestic child in need—not a child living overseas.• However, Millennials are the most interested age group in giving to international needs.PASTORS AT RISK OF BURNOUTBarna assessed burnout risk for pastors using 11 factors. “A pastor is low risk if they do not meet any of the factors, medium risk if they meet criteria for one of the factors, and high risk if they meet three or more of the factors.” Here are five of the 11 risk factors:• “Their primary day-to-day tasks do not fit their calling or gifts.”• “Tenure at their current church has been a disappointment.”• “Less confident in their calling today than when they began ministry.”• “Have suffered from depression sometime during their ministry.”• “Frequently feel emotionally or mentally exhausted.”Similar to "Barna Trends 2017," the book spotlights trends in culture, life, and faith. This 2018 edition adds a feature, “The Truth About a Post-Truth Society.” (Shocking stats! Just 36% agree that the church “…has my best interest at heart.”)As you—truthfully—document trends for your 2019-2021 Rolling 3-Year Strategic Plan, you’ll want to read the following articles/sections—or delegate them to your Strategic Planning Task Force (you do have a task force, right?):• Glossary—Theolographics (defines a “post-Christian”)• The “Fake News” Phenomenon (and what’s to blame)• Who Prays for Donald Trump?• The Pastoral Credibility Crisis• Gen Z Views on Sexuality• One in Three Teens Is Cyber Bullied• What Do You Hope Your Child Will Obtain From Their Education?• Degrees of Preparation: The top three things pastors wish they had been better prepared for• Busyness: A New Family TraditionBarna gives us a LOT to think about, but allow me to add more complexity to your planning process. Donald Rumsfeld always used four planning steps whether at Fortune 500 companies or in government. Read more about his second step: “Identify your key assumptions.” In Rumsfeld's Rules: Leadership Lessons in Business, Politics, War, and Life he notes that “It is possible to proceed perfectly logically from an inaccurate premise to an inaccurate and unfortunate conclusion.” How do these new trends impact your old assumptions?MORE BARNA TRENDS• Workplace Romance• Eight in 10 Parents Say Their Job Has Never Been Harder• Volunteers View Volunteering as an Act of Generosity• Barna Identifies Five Reasons the World Is No Longer in Agreement About Anything• 29% of Pastors Don’t Attend Conferences• Prayer Is a Rarity Among Church Teams• The Myth of the Lazy Teen• The Ultimate Financial Goal for Life (segmented by generation)• The Dechurched: America’s Greatest Mission FieldFINALLY…• A Q&A on Team Leadership With Gen. Stanley McChrystal (read my review of his 2015 book, Team of Teams: New Rules of Engagement for a Complex World)• More Than Clever Sermons, by Francis Chan• American Ideas About IslamThis is a must-read for your strategic planning process. (You do have a planning process, right?)

A lot of good and insightful material here in this book.

Extremely helpful book that outlines well-designed research across three broad sections: Culture, life, and faith. I highly recommend to anyone who is curious to know how the intersection of faith and culture are being interpreted in our time.

The Barna group is awesome if you like statistics!

I like the stats and I use it for teaching classes

I was looking for a reasonably priced anatomy coloring book for several months before finding this one. I almost didn't buy it because there weren't any examples of the inside pages. So, here you go, potential buyers. Despite what one reviewer said, there ARE pages on the reproductive system. Unlike other books I found, the images are clear (not grainy) and the details aren't so small you can't color them with pencils. The pages are double-sided. So, I would not recommend markers or pens. Overall, an excellent buy for the price.

I have a confession to make. I am 61 years old but I still read children's books. Don't judge.I have found over the years that if I want to learn something but am a beginner, the best place to start is a high quality children's book. All the information is correct, but simplified so that it is easily accessible. My friends think I am "well informed" and "well read", but they don't know that heavy tomes full of dry data are pretty much over my head. Children's books contain interesting stuff that is useful and presented in an engaging way and when I use books that are intended for kids, I usually come away with more useful knowledge that if I tried to tackle hoity-toity, intellectual reading material that isn't really all that interesting. That is why I purchased the HUMAN ANATOMY COLORING BOOK. Let's face it. Regular, adult level anatomy books have enough crammed in that they make my head spin and I find I don't know how to process it all. After all, I am not studying to be a doctor, but my doctor recommends that his patients get this simple coloring book to help them better able to take charge of their own health! I only need a basic but accurate knowledge of how my body works, and where all my "parts" are! When I have this simple understanding of my body, I can talk to my doctor in a clear way, and I can also better understand what he or she is telling me. I am better able to practice simple, at-home massage techniques, I am able to use an OTC laser, and in general have an overall enhanced respect for the way I am created. It is great to know enough to have good understanding for elementary nutritional, medical and physical fitness, and this can be had by getting the basics in a fun and easy manner. And if I need more advanced knowledge, this is a great place to start and will allow me to move on to more complicated adult level books with enough foundation to grasp things that are too hard for a beginner. It is also great for kids and they find it fascinating to learn about how they are put together. If you can also get an inexpensive stethoscope, you can enjoy some fun exploration with your kids or grandkids. Did you know that children who grow up with a basic knowledge and respect of their bodies are less likely to smoke, drink and abuse drugs? They are also less prone to obesity and more active and physically fit. And all this can be had in the most fun and engaging way!HUMAN ANATOMY COLORING BOOK is useful for children to adults, age 8 or 9 years old and up. It is too advanced for most preschool - 3rd graders. For younger children, I recommend "Little Explorers: My Amazing Body", which can be purchased here:Little Explorers: My Amazing BodyThe preschool book above is not a coloring book, but it is a great intro to anatomy for little ones who are just exiting babyhood. If you want coloring pages for very young children, Google the term "Human Anatomy Coloring Pages for Preschoolers" you will find a lot of printable pages that are appropriate for very young preschool-age kids. My favorite is a site called EduPics. When you get on the site, just click on the appropriate folders at the top of the page -from the home page, make sure you are under the tab labeled B&W and you want to go the folder called, "health". Once in the "health" folder, click on the sub-folder entitled, "human body". There you will find some great, simple coloring pages that are great for ages 3-8.So, there you have it folks. People think I am "smart", but really, I just like children's books! And this is one of the best! It has clear, easy to color pictures along with a short explanation of what each body part is and how it works. Awesome, informative and easy to do. Enjoy! :-D

For the price, I couldn't ask for better! This coloring book has many different bodily systems that it looks at, making it a great study tool for those who are going into nursing or those who are taking an Anatomy and Physiology class. Either way, it includes plenty of great study material for anybody in either course. While it does have a lot of useful information, it doesn't overdo the amount of information you look at so that you're not overwhelmed. This coloring book does require at least a 24 count coloring pencil pack, as there are some instances where it may want you to have the color light blue and so on. Yes, the colors are pre-labeled for you to fill in, which can help in comparing your work with someone else's. Just be prepared for a better-than-average coloring book.I bought this coloring book to supplement my learning in my Anatomy and Physiology class at college after my professor recommended buying one. This one was the cheapest and seemed the most promising, so I bought two so that she could have one. This coloring book is just that good for studying that she recommended to the entire class to buy this specific coloring book and is considering to make it required course material for upcoming semesters. She took it to the board of the department even and it received high praise from it. If that doesn't make you think about how great it can be for a department board to praise it, I don't know what could tell you it's great.I will upload pictures once I color in some pages fully.Overall, one of the best buys for the price I could ask for. This coloring book is informational but not overwhelming and has received high praise from college-level professors. I recommend this coloring book to anyone in nursing, anatomy and physiology, or even just curious about anatomy and physiology.

Every now and then I like to find new ways to review old material I already know. (Ok, I *have* to, or I'll start forgetting details.)This would be a great companion to a basic anatomy textbook, probably at the high school level. It would also be good for younger kids who are ready to start studying anatomy on their own or with help. The drawings are pretty clear and the text is easy to understand. Because the human body is not flat, several structures that might be difficult to understand with only one view are visible from several angles, sometimes including cross sections or range of motion. For me, I find that putting colored pencil to paper and filling in the drawings makes details clearer and easier to remember. Glancing at an image in a textbook is one thing, but actually filling in a drawing forces me to consider the shape I'm working with, to pay attention to where one bone ends and another begins, and to think about how things like joints actually work.I think that if I had worked with books like this the first time I took classes on this subject, I might have understood the mechanics of how the body works a little better before getting into the field and seeing damaged bodies, not working. This isn't a primary anatomy textbook. But it is a great basic workbook, and for me the act of coloring forces me to slow down and learn well. And it's an enjoyable refresher if you haven't picked up a textbook in a few years.
