I loved the first Harper McClain book so I pre-ordered this book. I love it just as much. Such a great book with good characters that you actually care about. It's a great "who done it" with a little romance thrown in. It also pulls at your emotions. I find myself empathizing with and tearing up over what Harper goes through. Great books!

A Beautiful Corpse is amazing. The thriller story with the police aspect and the reporter aspect mixed together pulled me from the first page making it so I never wanted to stop reading. I love that Harper knew Naomi, that she was on outs with the police, and that she was so persistent in her need to know what happen that she didn’t let any of that slow her down. She took the fact that she knew Naomi to push her to solve the crime. The fact that the cops were blackballing all her inquiries made her stand up for herself and demand fair treatment. Harper went beyond what a reporter should do, pushed where no one else was pushing, and didn’t let the fact that the killer was still out there deter her from following the facts as she learned them.I have not read the first book in this series and while this book is a standalone, I feel like I should go back and read it. There are characters that I’d love to know the history of, relationships that I want to know how they started, and storylines that I feel I would have enjoyed more knowing their backstories.I will be looking for more from Christi Daugherty and her Harper McClain series. The storyline flows perfectly, the characters are strong and realistic, and the mysteries are fun to try to solve.

This is an atmospheric mystery set in the heart of Savannah, Georgia. Harper McClain is a newspaper reporter focusing on the crime beat, and she gets a call one night that body has been found. Naomi Scott worked at a bar with Harper's friend, and it seems clear that her boyfriend killed her. He is claiming to be innocent, and the more Harper researches, the more she believes it was the man who was stalking Naomi. The only problem: he has a rock solid alibi. Harper needs to make sure she gets everything right, because her job is on the line.It was refreshing to read a mystery from the point of view of a journalist instead of a detective. Harper has a great spirit and she is beyond dedicated to her work. The way she jumps into everything she does makes this one of those books you can't stop reading until you are finished. I even had a few moments where I had to cover my mouth in shock! Harper is definitely a woman to be reckoned with, and I am excited to see where her story goes.

This was very good. Great writing, characters, dialogue and plot. It was the second in a series but I didn’t feel lost as I didn’t read the first. That being said there is a cliff hanger that will be covered in the next installment it appears. Normally things like that make me insane but I liked this one and will continue on so I can wait. There is closure on the plot mystery so don’t let that scare you off this one.One small bone to pick before I sign off highly recommending this one... the cell phone records? Really?!? I’m no detective but after seeing an occasional CSI or reading a thriller even I know that cell phone records would be subpoenaed, especially after the victims phone went missing. I understand that a phone was necessary to pull this off but access to any phone especially under the circumstances seems more plausible. I wish that had been handled differently. That’s just one small nitpick of a really great story.Thanks to NetGalley, the author and St. Martin’s Press for a copy in exchange for a review.

I'm not Jewish and am not likely to convert, but Jewish religious thought and practice is so connected to every aspect of real life here in physical life that it enriches my own experience and religious practice. I've read many books on the Jewish religion. This book, an older classic, is still be best guide to what is important in Jewish practice.To Be A Jew goes beyond the rote of observances. You will learn the why's and wherefore's out of which Jewish traditional practices come. I recommend it to anyone who wants to deeply understand more about the Jewish religion.

Amazing book! Very lovingly written, obviously written from an earlier time. But it really helped me to understand how to create a warm loving jewish household. It made me look forward to conversion.This takes you through all of the major life events, the good and the bad, as well as ones relationship to ones parents, spouse, and children from a jewish perspective.

With no disrespect. If you are a jew and don't go to temple , but would like to say the prayer and celebrate a holiday. Or if you want to observe a high holy day. This is a road map to learn as you go. It is an excellent book. We read the prayers when we light a candle to observe a family member that has passed on. We read the passover prayers out of this book. We also light the hannukka candles and read the prayers. The book offers the reader "how to be" in life. Its just so right. I am not a jew. My husband is . We have made our own traditions and this book is very much one of them. Its helped us teach our children how to be. I highly recommend it.

Every detail of Jewish practice is in this book, along with some of R. Donin's own aggadot and midrash on why these practices are important. In the end though, R. Donin is a believing Jew, and aggadot aside, he would say that any practice we do, we do because it's a mitzvah.Though Donin writes from an orthodox perspective, he is very gentle with the reader, never insisting that his way is the only way. He doesn't dictate, he encourages the reader to try what feels comfortable, and to explore, and provides material enough for a long, long exploration. I can't think of a single question about daily practice or synagogue etiquette that couldn't be answered by referencing this book.This book is intended for Jews, and as he states, particularly for Jews who grew up in a household where Yiddishkheit was not present. R. Donin assumes a certain amount of prior knowledge (such as understanding the Hebrew and Yiddish words I've used so far), so this is not a book for non-Jews with a casual interest in Judaism. However, anyone who has read one or two basic books on Judaism, or anyone who grew up Jewish, even if just barely observant should have no trouble with this book.Donin's writing is more than just engaging, it projects a kindness that really must be experienced. It was as though Zayde were reading aloud to me. The book has heart. Never once do I think that R. Donin has written this book because he is casting for people to turn back to orthodoxy. I really believe he was motivated out of a pure love for Judaism, and this comes out of the pages.

Whether you are a less than 'Observant' Jew who wants to learn more about connecting to haShem (aka: G-d) through haMitzvot, or you are a Goy (non-Jew) who is considering 'Gerus' (conversion), this is an excellent introductory work that covers a lot of bases. I highly recommend it.

Melanie Mitchell’s book “an introduction to Genetic Algorithms” explains what Genetic Algorithms are and how they work. It is somewhat outdated by now. However, that does not matter a whole lot since the book is focused on the foundations and the theory behind genetic algorithms and is academic in nature. This book is not a “cook-book” for Genetic Algorithms, and it does not have any practical examples or code that you can “borrow”. Being an academic book it goes into the theoretical foundations of Genetic Algorithms, it uses a fair amount of mathematics, and it backs up claims and discussions with references to research articles. At times the mathematics gets a little bit complex and you better know something about probability, functions, matrix algebra, vector/matrix notation, and infinite series.For those who do not know; Genetic Algorithms imitate aspects of the evolutionary process observed in nature to solve engineering problems and scientific problems. As such it can also shed light on the natural evolutionary processes (punctuated equilibria, the Baldwin effect, etc). In Genetic Algorithms you have a genetic representation, for example, a “chromosome” (bit string) and you simulate cross over (chromosome blending), mutations, fitness criteria, etc. Melanie Mitchell describes the use of Genetic Algorithms in scientific models, and how they can be used to simulate and explain evolution in nature, she describes different approaches to Genetic Algorithms, automatic programming, using Genetic Algorithms for prediction, and she explains how to use them to solve problems in Artificial Intelligence/Computer Science, and she also describes how to use them with evolving Neural Networks.What I liked about the book is that despite the fact that it is only 200 pages it covers a lot of ground. The book is well organized, well written, interesting, and concise. I read this book because I was interested in finding out whether I could use some form of Genetic Algorithm to solve some optimization problems at work. Therefore it might not have been exactly the right book for me. At the same time I found the book to be quite interesting and I liked the learning experience. You should understand Genetic Algorithms before you use them anyway. The book is 16 years old by now, perhaps too academic for some people’s taste, and I believe I found a term that was left out in a derivation, so I’ll give a four star rating, but I enjoyed reading it.

This book primarily deals with the theoretical side of genetic algorithms. If you are looking for practical knowledge of how to implement a GA you should look elsewhere. For all intents and purposes this is a textbook. It's heavy on theory and proofs, but doesn't always explain everything in depth (that's what class time is for). There are problems at the end of each chapter that can be assigned to students.There are case studies of many academic projects that seem to drone on forever and aren't really that useful in helping you learn how to write your own GA. Chapter 1 gives an overview and provides all of the appropriate terminology. Chapter 5 gives an high-level overview of how to implement a GA. Those are the 2 must-read chapters, all of the others can be used as torture for CS students.To recap, if you're teaching a class in artificial intelligence this book is good. If you're trying to figure out how to implement a GA to solve a practical problem not so good. That evens out to 3 stars for my rating. I recommend searching the web, there are a few good sites on GA programming.

I have an engineering degree, and I found this to be a little tough to follow for two reasons:1. Not enough step by step prodecure especially at the beginning. Mitchell is too quick to start with the math formulas. It turns out that Genetic Algorithms are fairly straight forward and easy to follow, but you have to read this book twice before you "get it" because Mitchell clouds the discussion with proofs and mathematical representations of systems. It is tough to follow.2. Mitchell does a poor job of selecting meaningful examples to illustrate the points. A nice simple set of examples where the average person easily picture the system would have been delightful. Instead this author chooses to illustrate the Genetic Algorithms through uncommon neural networks amoung other exotic applications. I found myself struggling to understand both the example (I didn't know a thing about neural networks!) and the genetic algorithm.When buying an Introduction type book, I expected it to be more 'down to earth'. this book is for advanced minds!

This book is NOT an "Introduction" to Genetic Algorithms. It is an academia blathering about genetic algorithms citing mostly other people's work with no practical examples. If you are looking to actually get some program code up and running to experiment with genetic algorithms, this is NOT the book to get. If you are a professor searching for a GA book to use in your classes, please do not select this one. Your students will hate your class.However, if you are looking for a discussion of some variations of genetic algorithm approaches to solving various problems from a higher level perspective, it might be worth a read. I realize this review may seem harsh, but when a book is so completely mis-titled it is misleading. This book is written for people with a thorough knowledge of genetic algorithm use already.

After reading the first few chapters (The chapters are very short) of Jane Austen's "Pride and Prejudice" I wondered how anyone could be interested in such pompous, egotistical, aloof and self serving characters?After reading on I said, "Wow! How could I be so interested in such characters?"Getting toward the middle of the book, I was hoping that it would never end.By the end of the book, I fully realized what a magnificent piece of writing I had just read."Pride and Prejudice" is one of the best sociological studies about early nineteen century British loyalty and society I have ever read - where title, rank, fortune, and good looks are in many ways the requirements of an approved marriage, much, much more than love. In fact, this wonderful book might not be as relevant today as two hundred years ago, but there are still many traces of such societies throughout the world, today. It was not all that long ago in America, where marrying outside of your religion, or ethnicity, was looked down upon.The book is full of wonderful characters, but Elizabeth (Lizzy) Bennet is, in my opinion, the star. Her character is so wonderfully and fully realized that at times I felt her jumping off the page and directly into my life.Liza, a fellow member and friend on Goodreads, informed me that she had read the book twice and still was not sure if the ending was 'sad' or 'funny.' To me, it was funny and exceptionally rewarding but sad to think that a lady's livelihood depended more on the wealth and rank of your partner than love.Quite an amazing book.

There must be many thousands of digital versions of Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice. I got this because I wanted to compare it with another that I had, and didn't realize until it was on my kindle that the name of the author on the cover page is incorrect!! The author is NOT Charlotte Bronte!!!!! This is so inexplicable and appalling a mistake, I had to write and mention it so that it can (hopefully) be corrected. The rest of the text is fine. I don't want it on my kindle, and have deleted it. How anyone could have confused Jane Austen and Charlotte Bronte (author of Jane Eyre) is beyond me.

This book is just gorgeous! I already own a few copies of Pride and Prejudice so I didn't need another but this was too cute to pass up. It's a generous size, the colors are bold and bright and the illustrations are whimsical and fun. A great gift for any jane Austen fan, even if she already owns a few copies ;)

"Pride and Prejudice" by Jane Austen started off annoying me and ended up enchanting me. Up until about page one hundred I found this book vexing, frivolous and down right tedious. I now count myself as a convert to the Austen cult.I must confess I have been known to express an antipathy for anything written or set before 1900. I just cannot get down with corsets, outdoor plumbing and buggy rides. Whenever someone dips a quill into an inkwell my eyes glaze over. This is a shortcoming I readily own up to but have no desire to correct. So I admit to not starting this book with the highest of hopes. I did really enjoy Ang Lee's "Sense and Sensibility" however and so when my friend threw the gauntlet down I dutifully picked it up.Boy did I hate him at first. To get anywhere with this book one has to immerse oneself in the realities of life and marriage in the nineteenth century. At first all this talk of entailment and manners just left me cold. I liked the language to be sure. Austen's dialogue is delightful through out but dialogue alone (no matter how delicious) does not a great novel make.A hundred pages or so in though I started to see what a shrewd eye for character this Austen woman had. Mr. Collins was the first person I marvelled at. His character springs forth fully formed as a total but somehow loveable ass. From that point on I found much to love about this book. I was so into it by the end that I was laughing at some characters, sympathizing with others and clucking my tongue at an unhappy few. In short I was completely absorbed.In conclusion I must now count myself a fan of Miss Austen's novels (and not just their fim adaptations) and do so look forward to acqauinting myself with more of her work in the future. "Emma" anyone?

The print edition of this book is awful. It's an awkward size so line lengths are too long to read comfortably. It is evident that basically no work was put into laying out the text of the book: line spacing is too close, there's no page breaks before chapters, chapter headings are the same typeface as the surrounding text. Typography is general is very poor: quotation marks that should be “curly” are instead "straight", for example. This book looks like someone just copy-pasted the raw text of the book, slapped a cover on it and called it a day. Zero effort went into making this. Do not buy this.

The size of this book is way too big like a magazine. I am not sure why you decided to print a book like this. The feeling of this book is like it was printed from a PDF file. I think the purpose of these kind book is to be read, carried and stored easily. Magazine can be printed bigger because it needs space to arrange the pictures. And why I buy a paper book and not going with digital? Because I want the feeling of reading books! Especially these kind of classic books!Very right hand one is the one I got from B&N bookstore. Much better feeling to read. And it's cheaper.
