I got a lot out of this little book. It starts off with the question: "What is critical thinking?" and sets readers up for the foundation of content the book is structured around. Although I always thought of myself as a critical thinker, after reviewing the qualities Zoe has laid out, it looks like I still have some work to do in this area. The book, although simple in its approach, discusses some interesting thought provoking concepts. The theory of Jean Piaget was new for me, knowing nothing about this theory or the impact it had on psychology.Diving into the theory and look into how children develop their "thinking minds" we get a good idea of how our minds develop over time into critical thinkers. This book The Critical Mind is really well researched. There is plenty of science backed facts and examples to support the material and draw readers in to wanting to know more.Chapter 5, How to Develop Critical Thinking Skills, is where you really get into the meat of the material and get to apply strategies and techniques to sharpen your won critical thinking.in order to develop critical thinking practices, we must: Question this assumptions; Accept information, question things, understand biases, think ahead, read, be empathetic, have options, surround yourself with people smarter than you are, be diplomatic, critique and practice...to name a few.Once we get past the barriers to critical thinking in the next chapter, it is easier to apply the critical thinking exercises in chapter 7. A wonderful guideline into the journey of thinking with intent and purpose. While the first read may offer a simple outline, it is the simple things that are often the hardest to master.The book has a thought-provoking approach. I would definitely recommend it to anyone who is struggling with in-depth analysis ability.
A little background on why I choose this book: this year I am dedicating to learning, reading, mental and physical health. I wanted to grow like never before and start changing the areas I lack. With that being said I think this is a wonderful book to help you open up your mind. The author uses great supporting detail as well as ways to practice and ways to enhance your current thinking. It has me thinking hard and diving into similar books on the topic. I only gave it 4 stars because I feel it could have been longer but I still got a lot from the book.
For me the book took several sittings to absorb the matter, due to my also being interrupted several times. The book really helped me to deal with those who are outright lying to me. Question everything should be my motto from this point forward. Thanks Zoe!
I really enjoyed reading it but it seems repeating itself saying same opinions and thoughts in different ways or sayings!, so in my opinion it could been written another way and more forward for the new on the subject.
I was timid to buy this book at first because of some of the reviews I read. But I'm glad I did! Great book in the sense that it delivers on its promise and has valuable information and tools on how to change your thinking. What it truly liked is the exercises at the end. It seems the book was written with great thought behind it.
Just because someone tells you something doesn't make it true. Think first, ask questions if you have to.Helpful practical advice to stay out of trouble.
I am very confident in myself as a politician after reading this wonderful book. I love the fact it it deals with everyday life decisions making.
