About the Author

Marilyn Stokstad, teacher, art historian, and museum curator, has been a leader in her field for decades and has served as president of the College Art Association and the International Center of Medieval Art. In 2002, she was awarded the lifetime achievement award from the National Women’s Caucus for Art. In 1997, she was awarded the Governor’s Arts Award as Kansas Art Educator of the Year and an honorary degree of doctor of humane letters by Carleton College. She is Judith Harris Murphy Distinguished Professor Emerita at the University of Kansas, Lawrence. She has also served in various leadership capacities at the University’s Spencer Museum of Art and is Consultative Curator of Medieval Art at the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art in Kansas City, Missouri Michael W. Cothren is Professor of Art History at Swarthmore College, where he has also served as Art Department Chair, Coordinator of Medieval Studies, and Divisional Chair of the Humanities. Since arriving at Swarthmore in 1978, he has taught specialized courses on Medieval, Roman, and Islamic art and architecture, as well as seminars on theory and method, but he most enjoys teaching the survey to Swarthmore beginners. His research and publications focus on French Gothic art and architecture, most recently in a book on the stained glass of Beauvais Cathedral entitled Picturing the Celestial City. Michael is consultative curator of medieval stained glass at the Glencairn Museum in Bryn Athyn, Pennsylvania. He has served on the board of the International Center of Medieval Art and as President both of the American Committee of the International Corpus Vitrearum and of his local school board. When not teaching or engaged in art historical research, you can find him hiking in the red rocks around Sedona, Arizona.

did the trick.. has some very interesting information on here.. probably the best art class I have ever taken and I'm sure 50% of that is due to the information in the text. would order again !

I am taking a course in Art History and this is the selected text book. I am pleased with the information in the book. Have rented it from Amazon which was a much less expensive way to go. Will be able to return book at the end of the semester.

Personally even though I had to buy the book, I never really used it. I still passed the class with an A. Make sure you need the book before you actually get it. Remember there is always PDF for this kind of stuff too.

I rented this book for a Art History class and was super impressed how simple and detailed each era was. My favorite parts were the "Look Closer" section where you look at the different details in a painting, building or a sculpture. If you were assigned to get this book from your Professor/teacher, you did a great job purchasing this book!

My granddaughter needed this for her Art History class and to save money we decided to rent instead of buying. Real Money saver!!!!!

For an art book, it was really good. It helped that the teacher was really into her topics. The book covered details well, and did a good job (I thought) of walking you through how art evolved. Good pictures too.

I rented this book and this is how it came in. All the pictures of naked women are covered with taped/glued pieces of paper throughout the whole book. Even pictures of sculptures and stained glass are covered. Are all the books like this or did I just happen to get the one that was altered?

It's a pretty good basic art history book. Not too boring or technical.

I was able to pass ICND1. Not really sure if this book was necessary or how much of a role it played on my success. But I like the idea of having flash cards to review. The cards were very informational and covered all the theory from the Wendell Odom book. Now that I've written this review and thought about the how the book was designed, I'd honestly buy it again. In one way or the other, it contributed to my success. It's a price that I'd gladly pay for again.

Flash cards? uh these are just printed like a flash card its printed on a thin piece of paper you cant use them as flash cards at all... waste of money.

Flash card answers should be short and memorable. This book did nothing to separate itself from the pack of endless study guides. I do not recommend it. You are better off making your own flash cards and saving money. If you wanna blow money on something, look for CBT Nuggets, Boson eX-sim, or another book.

Not really flashcards but more of a list of questions (there are no cards), still a helpful reference for self quizzing.

If your idea of "Flash Cards" is index cards with Q&A on front and back, this is NOT for you. If your idea of "Flash Cards" is an entire book with nothing but questions on 1 side of the page and answers on the back, then go ahead and buy this.

Darrell Abbott, known to fans of rock band Pantera as Dimebag Darrell, was shot to death by a deranged fan while playing a show in Columbus, Ohio, in 2004. This horrific event, recounted in nightmarish detail and replete with gratuitous comparisons to September 11, bookends Crain's reverential but superficial chronicle of the highly regarded heavy-metal guitarist's career. As narrated by Crain, Dallas Observer music editor, Darrell is a hard-drinking mama's boy who, growing up in Arlington, Tex., refined his guitar chops by walling himself up in his room for hours instead of going to high school. With his brother, Vince, and other neighborhood musicians, Darrell formed the band Pantera. Under the influence of Metallica and with the addition of a rough-edged singer named Phil Anselmo, the band evolved into a major force on the metal scene with its original blend of technical skill and Southern attitude. Pantera achieved massive success in the '90s with the release of a few albums, including the heaviest album to hit No. 1 on the charts, Far Beyond Driven, and toured the world. Crain dutifully recounts the addictions and intra-band squabbling that inevitably shadow rock success, but the cheerful strangeness and decency of Dimebag, perhaps best exemplified by his collaboration with the eccentric country musician David Allen Coe, manages to shine through, even in the darker corners of the narrative. The book begins which a preamble describing the horrible events of the night Dime was murdered. We all know what happened, but not exactly HOW it happened, and the author does a great job of describing the events with edge of your seat tension. The rest of the book chronicles the rise of Dime/Pantera into the realm of Metal Gods. A couple of thing stood out. Dime was such a gifted player, a veteran of the club circuit at the ripe age of 17, obliterating his competition, some which were years older than him. Second it shows just how honest, unassuming and sincere Dime was in life. Not to mention how down to earth, he and Vinny lived with their mom well after Pantera became a national act, and one of their first acts of generosity was to make sure SHE was taken care of. Vinny and Dime were the perfect Yin/Yang. Dime represented the good time rock and roll, Vinny was the heady business type with very underrated savvy in a cutthroat business. A great deal of time is spent on the typical 'backstage' antics, but a lot of time is spent on the evolution of the band from a hair metal outfit to the bludgeoning juggernaut that Pantera became,all through it, we get glimpses of Dime's humanity through touching annecdotes that remind us just how special he was as a human being. Dime loved to party, but it never interferred with his true love: guitar shredding, and this theme is repeated throughout the book. My only criticism was that I would have liked a little more perspective from the "outcast" Phil Anselmo, his take, his thoughts etc...but then the book is about DIME, really, and it's a minor criticism....well worth a read!

Product came in perfect condition. My only complaint was how long it took to receive. Says it was shipped in the US, which is where I am as well, but it was 4 weeks or do until I received it. It is well written, really covering the life, as well as tragic death of one of our greatest guitarists of all time. A must read if you like music

I knew the ending. I remember getting the phone calls from friends and all they said was “Dime’s been murdered”; what more could we say to each other? But I WAS NOT PREPARED FOR THE ENDING!! TO READ IT IN SUCH VIVID DETAIL!This is a great book, very well written and truly explores the lives of Dimebag and Vinnie. I think he also was respectful in covering the break up of Pantera. He doesn’t portray it in a bias way, or try to prove it was all Phil Anselmo’s fault etc.Overall I thoroughly enjoyed reading this except the ending. Be sure you have a box of Kleenex and maybe even a Black Tooth Grin to fortify you to read that.

Not a bad story, a lot of it dating back to Dime's early years. I'm a huge fan, and Dime's murder still haunts me to a degree all these years later. For some reason, the book seems to focus on Dime's drinking habits more than anything, which became a little monotonous. Pretty good book though.

The quality of the book itself was exactly how it was described. The content, however, is a little watered down, and the author repeats himself a lot. Still not a bad book for the price, just don't expect some awesome Pantera "tell-all" book.

My husband loves Dimebag and this book! A must have for a real fan.

Such a gread book. easy to read and kept you interested. made you feel like you really knew Dime and like you were there his last night. I recommend this book for any Dimebag or Pantera fan.

I began reading the book expecting some exciting twists and turns before arriving at a blockbuster ending. The twists and turns were there, though some really defied credibility.The main characters held my interest, though the villains (Valendrea and Ambrosi) were too unredeemably evil and unsubtle to be believable. As the tension mounted, what I looked forward to was learning what revelations had been hidden for so many years. And then... I found out. What a colossal disappointment! If I were a Roman Catholic, I might have been insulted by the heretical nature of the contents. As a mainstream Protestant, I was insulted by the sheer stupidity -- and the author's laziness in not coming up with something better. Such a let down! I finished the book, hoping that there still might be something worth reading. Sorry I wasted my time. Two points for okay storytelling. Three points lacking for the unbelievable popes, ridiculous plot points, and a message that Mary never would have wasted her time on.

This book is about the last Marian apparitions and the governance of the Roman Church.The catholic clergy has never taken a clear stand as far as supernatural appearances by the Virgin Marye are concerned. This uncertainty gives room to create a marvellous novel based on some historical facts enriched with the creativity, precision and skilfulness of Steve Barry.Barry is very good at creating a storyline in which the good ones (the German Pope, his Irish secretary and a African cardinal) want to help the Church restoring the truth and the bad ones (the secretary of state and other Italian cardinals) want to help the church restoring the original faith . In this struggle, knowing the secret behind Fatima is crucial and who will succeed will be in the position to forge the future of the Church.What I did like the most in this book? First, I could not put it done. The book comprises of a series of events that are quite unpredictable. This author does not annoy the reader with lengthy and tedious descriptions of places and feelings: the focus is always on the unfolding of the eventsSecond, it was able to stimulate my interest in history and specifically in the history of Church.Barry is a declared history-lover and and his passion is able to affect the reader.The thrilling plot and the historical base are probably two features of all Barry’s books, but I regard this even better than the one I read before, “The Romanov Prophecy”, which was already 5 starsAt end of the book Berry states accurately which facts are historically true and which are his own creations. This is methodologically very correct and shows great respect towards the importance of History.

Love the factual history that Steve Berry puts in all his books. Although the plot conclusion makes an impressive reasonable resolution for a fiction story, it surprised me that it would go that direction. This author is a master of weaving a fiction story into the accurate and DETAILED facts of history. I find myself stopping and going to google to learn more about the fascinating places, items and events he is describing. Although in a couple of his books, I distinctly disagree with the fictional way he concluded his subject matter, I accept that that is his writers privilege. Even at that the pieces of his story fit so smoothly and agreeably that it makes an excellent read. Also what an exciting way to learn about so much.

This was one of Berry's first novels. It is an extremely well researched suspense novel similar (but better) than his more recent books. Religious dogma is questioned and related to several philosophical and moral issues. Character development is outstanding as is the introspection involving personal relationships. We won't give away the plot except to say that rarely have we encountered a novel that we couldn't put aside. We burned the midnight oil on this one!

I enjoy a good conspiracy theory suspense and Steve Berry does a really good job of these fictional stories but following accurately true events in history. I'm glad he adds separating fact from fiction at the end.

Of all of the Steve Berry novels, this one happens to be the slowest one he's written. It's also, in my opinion, the worst book he's written.While Berry is always detail orientated, here he just gets bogged down in details. Further, he never really seems to get to the point. The "climax" of the book is really more of a stifled yawn.I have a firm policy about reading a book all the way through... however this time, I almost didn't make it. Too few details, too many threats, too many political "intrigues" without the excitement to back them up & not enough of Berry's famous nail biting, adventure with death right on the hero & heroines tale.Avoid this one... it's just not that good.

Mr Berry claims to be Catholic educated but it is not evident. It is Castel Gondolfo not Castle. The characters would have been at home in the Godfather novels.

I think I’ll stick to the Cotton Malone books. This was interesting, but terribly entertaining. I would recommended passing on this unless you’re really into the ins and outs of the Catholic Church.

Since when did corn become anti-inflammatory? I have chronic Lyme Disease, which is an inflammatory condition. Many of these ingredients are not what I consider anti-inflammatory. They actually cause inflammation.

Very informative and tasty recipes.

One thing I liked about the book is that it gave me some real information about the role of inflammation and related things like histamines. I got a better understanding of how chronic inflammation can be responsible for things that can affect so many later in life, illnesses such as Alzheimer’s, diabetes, cancer, and heart disease. Diet and chronic inflammation are very connected, and this is one thing in your control that can make a huge difference in your life.The recipe for Shredded Vegetable Pancakes inspired me to incorporate some golden and red beets into the mix, something I might otherwise need a little encouragement to add to my plate. I used my food processor to do the shredding of carrots, celery beets, and green pepper. You can adapt to about any vegetable you have on hand. Add a few assorted spices.Oat flour is used to bind it all together, and I did not want to use as much as the recipe called for, so I found it a bit challenging to get the patties to hold together. I fried them in the skillet sort of like vegie hash browns, while continuing to experiment with other ingredients that could serve the same purpose of binding the ingredients.I had been wanting to try making my own cashew nut cheese and found the recipe here straight forward and tasty. It is one ingredient in her cauliflower mac and cheese recipe. I have made cauliflower mac and cheese but not with nut cheese and will try this soon. I will also try her variation of winter squash soup, one of my staples and I am always looking for new variations and flavors.Over the last decade I have had a few, very painful episodes of "tennis elbow," switching from one side to the other, sometimes lasting for many months at time. Elastic support bands around my elbow provided minimal relief and were not helping me get any better. At one point I had to use an elbow support brace clamped to my desk. I was getting very frustrated with the last bout, which again went on for months and just wouldn't go away. After only a month of eating a less inflammatory diet, the pain completely disappeared and has not returned. Can I say without a doubt that it went away because of the diet? Of course not, but then again I don't have to.I can just be happy that it's gone! My hope is that the reduction in inflammation is having beneficial effects throughout the rest of my body.

I wanted to try to include more anti-inflammatory foods into my diet and was delighted with the choice of recipes that I've tried so far. The Shredded Vegetable and Kale Pancakes recipe was a hit. The ingredients work well together; they cooked up easily and were a welcome addition to any vegan dinner. We love roasted veggies in our household so I was anxious to try the Mediterranean Roasted Vegetables recipe. The herb mixture of rosemary, basil and marjoram was interesting and the Herb-Almond Aioli added at the end made a tasty dressing. Cauliflower is all the rage now as a substitute for starchy potatoes and rice and the Cauliflower Fried "Rice" with Pineapple and Cashews is a rave vegetable dish. I won’t list all of the recipes I’ve tried, but overall I think the recipies in this book are easy to prepare with items already in my pantry and very tasty.--

This cookbook has beautiful color photos. I also like the fact that each recipe comes with the nutritional breakdown of carbs, calories and so on. I wish all recipe books included that information. The recipe for Golden Beet "Rice" is a wonderful twist on the riced vegetable trend.

I am interested on anti-inflammatory eating for my arthritis and my husband's Alzheimer's. I especially like the simple sauerkraut recipe. Also the cashew gravy and cashew cheese sauce are easy and delicious.

Found a lot of valuable information on various anti-inflammatory foods. Lots of recipes and good pictures too. Passed on a copy to a friend.

Wolfhart Pannenberg has a comprehensive style where he gives the reader a synopsis of the entire history of theological thought - all crammed into the first volume. Pannenberg takes us through a series of viewpoints and alternative viewpoints, giving us a chronological sequence of a multitude of varying theologies. After demonstrating to the reader how alternative theologies have evolved over time, he gives us new, innovative ideas based on a fusion of the best aspects of past ideas. He gives us a complete history of theology regarding such subjects as the Trinity, the split between evangelical, natural, and systematic theology, and the establishment of consciousness through the Trinity. He then settles on his own original ideas based on an exhaustive study of all of the alternative theories throughout history. The end result is a fantastic new vision of the preservation of consciousness through God, the Son, and the Spirit.Pannenberg starts this volume with a detailed exploration of the split between Barthian evangelical theology and natural theology. This split is one of the most important questions facing theologians today. He makes a scathing critique of Barth's orthodox evangelical theology in favor of a more relaxed natural theology that allows for a universal salvation. He discusses various forms of natural saving dispositions and natural salvation energy. This energy acts before or independently of Christ, using the Spirit to pave the way for Christ. In this sense the Spirit acts to glorify Christ in both past, present and future.Pannenberg's idea of the natural knowledge of God is based on the idea of "the finite being carved out of the infinite" (p.139). "Dissatisfaction with the finite can take the form of the question of God only on the condition of a knowledge of God that is gained elsewhere" (p.116). In other words, as long as we have basic knowledge of the existence of God, we will have a sense of dissatisfaction with the finite. This causes us to look at the finite more carefully, leading to basic self-conscious being. This concept is very reminiscent of Jurgen Moltmann's ideas regarding God's natural saving dispositions as described in the Crucified God. As long as we have some basic concept of the eternal, we will have a concept of the temporal in contradistinction. "The truth is that the finite is not self-grounded but is carved out of the infinite and the totality" (p.140).Pannenberg describes this as natural knowledge of God because this type of awareness of finitude can penetrate the secular realm, even if people are not aware of it. "Religious awareness stands in opposition to secular awareness only because the latter is not aware of the fact that finite objects are conditioned by their being carved out of the infinite and defined by it... the holy in religious awareness can also be viewed as constitutive for our secular reality" (140). The important thing to remember here is that a very basic idea of the eternal conditions our awareness of the temporal, and we will have consciousness as long as this basic knowledge of God is in place. But this awareness of finitude is "not self-grounded" but "carved out of the infinite", proving that God is in fact necessary for natural conscious awakening. This is roughly the basis of Pannenberg's natural theology - a basic and primordial consciousness of our selves as finite in contrast to a general idea of an eternal God.Perhaps even more important, however, is Pannenberg's discussion of the Trinity. This is based on "the glorifying of the Son by the Spirit" (p.315). Basically, the Spirit orchestrates world-historic events on a grand scale using subconscious psychic undercurrents (possibly related to what depth-psychologists call the collective unconscious). These events ultimately force us to turn to Christ, glorifying Christ and God by showing us the internal logic and synchronicity within world events. This is how "the Spirit glorifies not himself but the Son, and in him the Father" (315). The Son glorifies the Father by proving the Father's love through forgiveness of sins and promise in the afterlife. These prove to be the critical missing pieces in glorifying God. And the Spirit orchestrates the life-changing events which force us to turn back to Christ. This is how we go from Spirit to Christ to Father. Before Christ there was no world harmony, so the glorification of the Father could not be complete without the Son. But the pre-Christian events were orchestrated by the Spirit to create a society that could recieve the Son. This is how the Spirit > Son> Father sequence works.Look, this is a very difficult book and any discussion of the Trinity provides infinite food for thought. We cannot achieve a full understanding of the Trinity in a short review. All I can say is if you are reading this and you want to get caught up with the latest trends in theology you have to attempt this book. Good luck.
