“If you want more from Goodnight Moon author Margaret Wise Brown, Big Red Barn is the book for you! Sharing a similar rhythm to Goodnight Moon, Brown takes us on a tour of a barn. As the sun begins to set, the animals begin to go to sleep.” (Brightly)

I am a big fan of Margaret Wise Brown's work. I bought the big book format to read to a small group of children, plus a board book for an individual child to enjoy alone. I also bought board books to give to children as birthday gifts. The story includes size, color, and number concepts. The illustrator, Felicia Bond, did beautiful daytime pictures & the night-time pictures are very effective. Numerous farm animals are named & pictured. The text flows easily & guides children to participate by locating details in the pictures. Big Red Barn is a wonderful addition to any preschool library. It might be most appropriate for children age 3-5, but I have read it successfully to 2-year olds.

My son loves this book. It might be a personal thing, but this book has taught him to put himself back to sleep if he wakes up at night. His bedtime routine consists of us reading the 'Big red barn' book to him and telling him that the animals are off to sleep so its time for him to sleep as well. We also tell him that if he wakes up at night and doesn't see light outside the window, it means it's still night time and he waking up will disturb the animals. It has worked for us tremendously!

This was a favorite of both of my girls from infants until age 3ish. Even at 4 they would sometimes pull it out and ask me to read it to them. I have literally read it hundreds of times. It rhymes in a sing-song sort of rhythm, and almost all kids love stories about animals, so it's a hit. I will often buy this as a baby shower gift and write a note inside explaining that it was a favorite of my girls and I hope that Baby ____ enjoys it just as much."By the Big Red Barn by the great green field, there was a pink pig who was learning to squeal." The story is about the animals playing on the farm, and at the end of the day they go to sleep, which makes it great to read at bedtime. In my opinion, this book far surpasses another more well-known goodnight book by Margaret Wise Brown, Goodnight Moon.

Four stars because my almost one year old daughter LOVES it. She chooses it to read at least once a day. The illustrations are nice, and it helps kids learn the names of the farm animals. I didn't give it five stars because I wasn't that impressed with the writing... Rhyming "horse" with "horse"??? And putting pictures of pigs in the story & never mentioning them, yet frequent mentions of hens & roosters. Surely she could have come up with something better. Some pages rhyme and some do not. Not a big deal, but affects the flow of the story, in my opinion. Perhaps I'm being a bit of a hard critic though!

A going-to-sleep tale of the farm. Description of farm animals through the day and then getting ready to sleep. Lovely detailed art with all referenced animals depicted for your kids to discover in the scene. Truly poetic narrative. Thankfully I had small kids and had a good excuse to own this jewel - otherwise, I really would have bought it simply for my own library. Somehow "peace" flows out of the pages and brings contentment to the reader.

One of our favorites! My son loves listening to this story. The pictures are attractive and eye-catching. He enjoyed looking at it from a few weeks old.

I just received this book, and it is not what I expected. It is huge, 15 inches x 17 inches. Yes, if you read carefully, the page does note that; however, I did not notice it and wouldn't have expected a paperback book to be this large. I bought this for an Easter basket. I did not by the board book, even though this is for a very young grandchild, because the reviews said it is hard to open. This book, however, while colorful and unique, presents a basic storage issue. Though I am sure all of my grandsons, ages 8 to 3 months, would enjoy this book, I am not sure I will keep it because no one will want to store it. It won't fit on a traditional bookshelf, and because it is a paperback book, it will easily tear if not kept carefully. I think I will return it and try the hardcover version, which is a more normal size.

This book was originally a gift from my mother; we loved it so much we have bought copies as gifts also! The pictures are simple and clear and engaging. The text is beautiful and flowing. It is a simple poem following the course of a day on a farm, focusing on the animals. We read this to our son many many times over the last couple of years (he's now 2 and 3/4!). I will never forget the day he started to say the poem with me. I was distracted and hesitated in one of the phrases, and he finished it for me. Now we say the poem together, alternating lines, as a way to calm down and focus, when he gets antsy on the bus or in line at the grocery store.I am also a Montessori teacher, and the children always love to hear me recite this poem from memory. I recently bought a copy for my former toddler classroom and I have been told it is very popular there. If you get this book, look on the second page. The horse's "fire bum" is one of my son's favorite parts!
