I'll admit that this book is on my coffee table, right next to the one the Olson twins did-FYI, this one is bigger. I love Roitfeld (she's the former editor of French Vogue, is there a more amazing job?) and I love her style. To me, she's everything Anna Wintour is not- her style is edgy with lots of eyeliner and sheer fabric and using clothes in different ways from what they were intended. This book is like a personal fashion scrapbook about inspirations and looks that have inspired her from her photoshoots, plus comments from designers and photogs, usually in the form of handwritten notes. THe layout is great-it's a big book and it challenges you from a fashion point of view to come up with your own style and interpretations. Unlike the Olson book, it's not straight interviews with designers but an interview with Roitfeld and there's lots of comments and recollections from Roitfeld about other designers. One caveat-although she's now 'anti-smoking' there are A LOT of models smoking in the book. Great coffee table book.

This is definitely your coffee table show off book.It really allows more personable approach to Carine Roitfeld. It is surprisingly easy to read and the pictures are beautiful. But just be aware it does have a fair amount of nudity so it's not a book to show your parents if you are a teenager... Otherwise a beautiful book, wish I could see more of Carine's picture, but this is again a book on her styling work so.

Fascinating and gorgeous.... Iike a portal into a fabulous world...if carine is your fashion guru this is a book to get lost in...

Met all of my expectations and more. At first, I thought the book was a bit large but soon I found myself enjoying it - the pictures are beautiful and I quite like this unusual size.

Detailed information is included on black powder and alternative loads, projectile performance and ballistics.The authors wrote Amazon reviews for the book declaring it stillborn because of some proofreading issues--notably repeated misspellings of the name of the Starr revolver. In fact the book is in stock on Amazon and well worth its price, typos and all.

Mike Cumpston and Johnny Bates have taken on the task of sharing the how-tos, and what-abouts of classic 19th century arms, and they do a fine job of it.Things start off with an overview on the loading procedure followed by a quick discussion of the various historical bullet types with their positives and negatives laid out. Then the authors get to the meat and potatoes.The book is sectioned into chapters covering three historical periods to provide the reader a sense of perspective on the development of the various handguns discussed in each chapter. The history and development of each model is followed by a shooter's review of the pistol's ballistic performance, and disassembly instructions.I heartily recommend this book for anyone interested in the revolvers of the true "Old West". (That's before the Colt .45 "Peacemaker", y'all) The historical information is well presented, and the shooting reviews give the reader an excellent feel for what these pistols were capable of. The color photographs in this edition are a huge improvement over a prior version published some years ago.An excellent choice for experienced shooters and newcomers alike. You'll never watch "The Outlaw Josey Wales" or "Quigley Down Under" the same way after reading this book.

.…but I'd like more information, somehow, (the photographs are generally very good but I wouldn't mind more of them- and some diagrams as well).Lots of history and even more test firing info and gun reviews including the author's opinions on who makes the best powder to shoot with. The book is copyrighted 2014 but, some earlier reviews seem, to me, to indicate that they had publishing difficulties- a few bits in the text make me think it was written as early as 2006. No matter, still the book to own if you have any interest in the subject. It even covers the subjects of making repairs and/or improving your revolvers function.The author's gave instructions on making paper cartridges in their book "Percussion Pistols and Revolvers"- that information is repeated here and might even be expanded upon a bit.Italian gunmaker Uberti gets favorable mention in the text but their website (their name .com, no longer lists some reviewed items, still good to read just in case you're able to buy those pieces somewhere) isn't listed in resources.Cimarron Firearms is listed but their website is not, easy enough to "Google"… I'd guess most of the companies have sites that can be found that way.

This is by far the best book I have read about cap and ball revolvers. It gets a little technical at times but it is good that it does. The author also gives lists of references and order houses for parts, complete guns and components for shooting. This is a fantastic reference manual plus a great read.

I highly recommend this book. I have bought several versions. They were all good and very informative. This latest version is really nicely done with color photos. The authors clearly have extensive knowledge of cap and ball revolvers, from their mechanics to their history. They are pretty darn good shots to boot. Some of the historical data I have never seen elsewhere. I have a fairly complete library on early Colt revolvers. Yet I refer to this book often. I have over a dozen cap and ball revolvers that I shoot fairly regularly. The authors are right on in the advice they provide shooters. My experience differs a bit in that I typically shoot multiple cylinders without the need to clean each time as they suggest. However, with the cheaper reproductions this might be necessary. Its not with Uberti and Ruger revolvers. I also don't see the need to waste caps drying out oil soaked nipples: don't flood the nipples and chambers with oil in the first place.

If you are interested in black powder firearms and the history of them, then this book is for you. It gives firearm details, history how they were made, and who used them. Great book for black powder shooters.

This is a superb introduction to percussion revolvers. I learned quite a bit from every page. The photos are excellent. It even is printed on very high quality paper. As another reviewer noted, Cumpston and Bates really want the reader to learn and become proficient. It is very much worth buying and reading

I retired this year and picked up a new hobby--painting. Unfortunately, I live in a very rural area and can find no classes close by so I ordered this book. Oh my!!! Claire Watson Garcia's book is totally amazing. She is not only a very gifted artist, but she is a gifted teacher, too, and that's extremely important when writing a "how to" book. It covers EVERYTHING a beginner needs to know, especially how to mix the paints to get the correct consistencies and colors, and it just gets better from there. There is a chapter clearly explaining every aspect of what an artist (not just a beginner) needs to know, common mistakes beginners often make, and how to fix all those mistakes. All the chapters feature numerous paintings by beginners showing initial paintings and then explanations of how to fix problems. I have checked out many books from the library and bought many others, but this book covers everything so much better and infinitely more clearly. I have started reading so many books and become frustrated halfway through the exercises because I didn't know what to do to fix the problems, but this book is working for me. In my opinion, this book is the closest thing I can get to actually sitting in a class. It's for absolute beginners, but I'd be willing to bet people who are past the very beginning stages would love this book, too. You can't go wrong with this book. I LOVE it!

I want to attempt a comparative review of six instructional books for the beginning painter, which I will eventually rank. Before I go into this, here are a few words about where I'm coming from. Needless to say, if your background and expectations are different from mine, you may well arrive at a completely different evaluation of these books.I am relatively new to painting, but had some drawing skills already. I was looking for a book that starts at the very beginning (what supplies to buy etc.) and then introduces me to a range of techniques for painting in realistic style. More specifically, I would like to see the following in my ideal book:(a) Reasonably specific step-by-step instructions that don't leave me guessing how the author got from A to B; at the same time, I would like to be treated as an adult and have clear explanations of why I'm doing what I'm doing throughout;(b) exposure to a variety of techniques such as painting in layers, alla prima;(c) demonstration artwork in realistic style that inspires me to learn what is needed to get there.One more general remark: four of the books I'm reviewing here work with oils and two with acrylics, please keep this in mind if you have already decided on what your favorite paint is. I'll note this below. (I used both oils and acrylics at an early stage and would actually recommend this approach.)(1) Still Life Painting Atelier: An Introduction to Oil Painting (oil): For me, this is head and shoulders above the rest. It succeeds in all three criteria (perhaps the author's artwork is not the most stunning I've ever seen). I'll give it a clear A.(2) Painting for the Absolute and Utter Beginner (this book, acrylics): Pretty good in my opinion, with many useful little tips in it, though sometimes it could be a bit more specific (rather than "work on the shapes, refine the colors") and it wasn't always clear to me why the author made the choices she made (why glaze here, use opaque color there?). I'll call it a B+.(3) Painting in Acrylics: The Indispensable Guide (acrylics): This is actually an excellent book, just a bit different from what I described above. It works great as a reference book (and as a coffee table book, fantastic artwork in it). I won't grade this one.(4) Lessons in Classical Painting: Essential Techniques from Inside the Atelier (oil): A pleasure to read and look at, and similar in approach to Friel's book actually in the instructional parts, but it has a rather different feel to it, much chattier and philosophical and light on the actual hands-on instruction. That's a B for me.(5) Oil Painting Secrets From a Master (oil): Sorry, but advice such as (random example, the book is full of this) "it's not how to paint what you see, but how to see what you paint" doesn't do it for me. Also, much of Leffel's work (the "master" from the title of the book) is too loosely painted for my taste. I'll give it a C-.(6) The Oil Painting Course You've Always Wanted: Guided Lessons for Beginners and Experienced Artists (oil): This seems to be a popular book, but I honestly can't understand why. The instructions are unmotivated and too vague, and the author is an abstract painter whose attempts at realistic demonstration painting in the book are unconvincing (especially the portraits). Some useful information, for example on color mixing, but the book just didn't work for me at all as a course. I'll give it a D.By the way, the drawmixpaint videos on youtube are another wonderful resource, in my opinion.

This is the companion "painting" book to Claire's similarly-named book about "drawing". (I previously reviewed that on Amazon.). This painting book was even more helpful to me than it's wonderful companion. Let me explain why from my perspective.For a beginner (me, at least), painting is much harder to learn than drawing. The same challenges of drawing remain, such as shape accuracy, volume, texture and perspective. But painting requires the additional need for color visualization, paint-mixing skills and brushwork in order to creat, among other things, a proper "value structure". That should meld appropriate colors and spatial illusion to make a painting, not only cohesive, but also able to "pop" off the canvas to suit the artist's intention.Claire's 160-page painting book is extremely well-organized. It proceeds from materials selection to paint-mixing (for both hue and consistency) to brush-handling. Then she combines these and other elements in very-lucid step-by-step lessons for still-lifes, nudes and portraits. (No landscapes.) Throughout, the volume is filled with charts, photos and pictures that make her "plain-English" text readily understandable - andApplicabl

I have been painting for a few years, self taught. I decided prior to taking classes I would read some beginner books to learn the terminology and techniques. The book exceeded my expectations and is something I highly recommend to all of my friends or any artist looking for clarification or guidance.

For those of us who can't just sit down and start painting, it is a wonderful book to explainthe process and the many options available without having to reinvent the wheel. The student paintings are extremely well done and lets me be encouraged !

I added this book to my library as I am still pretty new to painting. I can see some useful information but one very useful bit of information would be for it to be clearer that the book focuses on acrylic painting. Nowhere on the book or in the description did I find that information and my search was for books on watercolor. My nephew uses acrylics so he will get some use out of it, too. I would suggest that they make it clearer so that others won't make the same mistake I did.

This was another Christmas Present to myself, and it is SO great!!! I can't believe how much I've learned, and I'm only 1/4 of the way through it.

I love under the sea pictures. You can let your imagination really go crazy ( not that you can’t with other pictures ). These don’t get too bogged down with detail, nor are they too simple. Although there ARE a few fairly simple pictures in case a child in your life would like to join you or you just feel like a more simplistic design that day. But even they are well done. I’m really enjoying listening to music and coloring again. I find it theraputic. If I really love a picture I’ve done, there are apps where you can transfer them onto mugs, pillows, T-Shirts, etc. I highly reccomend this as an activity...AND ...THIS coloring book! 🐢🐙🥽💫💫💫💫💫

I love this book since the first start reading the main entrance page... i was looking for something like this long time and is pretty helpfull it explains easy and well the characteristics and definitions of the Paleo Ivrit is a must have for those who really want to study the real roots.

This book along with others help to take The Scriptures back to the language and meaning that they were originally written in.

With this Lexicon, I can all but put away my big, heavy "Strong's Concordance" and likewise my "Klein's Etymological Hebrew Dictionary." It's easy to use and does have the cross-refs with Strong's if I need them. Definitely a Sine Qua Non for a Hebrew beginner student (me) as well as the learned scholar.

My husband has been studying Bible for about 40 years now. He loves this book and it has given him some really valuable insights. Thank you to the authors.

Kathy J. Morrison, MSN, RN, CNRN, SCRN, FAHA, is a certified neuroscience nurse, a certified stroke nurse, a Fellow of the American Heart Association, and a recipient of the prestigious Pennsylvania State Nightingale Award for Clinical Nursing Excellence. Ms. Morrison serves on The Joint Commission Expert Panel for Stroke Center certification standards. Ms. Morrison’s published works have appeared in nursing journals and neuroscience course curricula. I am an RN on the acute Neuroscience unit in a moderate-sized 380 bed hospital. I'm also a stroke nurse so I do administer TPA in the ER I bought this book was really impressed with how it read and used it to study for my SCRN exam. I also bought the companion book once it came out, and I used the app that goes along with the other book, Common Sense experience and I passed the test. Very happy would recommend!

good and basic. But not enough to use to study for the SCRN (stroke certification ) exam. this is what I would leave at the unit secretary's desk for floaters. But if you are dedicated to stroke, get a denser thicker book and just learn it all. Your patients will love you.

I'm studying for my SCRN and this is a great resource to start with. It covers basic anatomy and physiology, and basic information about stroke. I highly recommend this as a refresher prior to buying the Comprehensive Stroke Review book from AANN.

Great resource for medical professionals involved in improving stroke care within their facility. As a nurse, I found a lot of great recommendations for post discharge tools, education, and primary/secondary prevention info. In next edition would like to see more info on thrombectomy eligible patients and guidelines surrounding care for these patients. CT perfusion study imaging is an area that I would like more information about as I continue to build my skill set as a professional. Overall, great resource that I will reference over and over again.

I am a SCRN! I read this book first before I did my other studying and I found that it covered most of the topics I saw on the exam and it explained them well. I highly recommend this book.

This book is written in a way that you can remember key points especially if you are preparing for the SCRN. I have started reading it and I already know it is a great investment and will be in my reference library even after I do my exam. I've cooked vegan recipes of a variety of Asian cuisines from several cookbooks and online sources, and this book is noticeably beneath all of them in quality. Overall, the six recipes I've made from it have all been lacking in flavor and have tried to make up for it by smothering the ingredients in oil or soy sauce.On top of that, the recipes themselves are _very_ badly written. I mean:- missing indications of cook times -- not even relative statements like "until warm" or "until transulent"- physically impossible instructions -- "remove from heat" with no corresponding instruction to actually turn the heat on, let alone what level or for how long- ingredients listed in the recipe but never used in the instructions. This happened in half the recipes I tried. I managed to fill in the holes as best I could there.Finally, maybe it's just me, but opening up an Asian cookbook that claims to be "authentic" and reading something like "you can use either garlic chili sauce or Sriracha sauce" is pure bullcrap as far as I'm concerned.

I like the recipes in this book. Pretty much the most popular Asian dishes from Chinese, Japanese, Thailand and Korea. I question the sweet and sour vegetable stir fry recipe because there was no vinegar or acid to make it sour. So I wonder if these recipes were tested.There were 48 recipes and no photos other than the cover so if photos of how the dish should look is important, don’t buy this. These recipes are in most Asian cookbooks.

I'm really glad I bought this book. I have been thinking about going vegan for ages and was just a bit concerned that i wouldn't get a healthy balance diet and that the food would be boring. This book has removed all my fears. There is a wide range of ingredients needed to cook these dishes and the tastes and levels of flavour are quite superb. I love Asian cuisine anyway and these recipes are right up there. Give yourself a treat and try some even if you are not vegan or even vegetarian.

This is an excellent cookbook and my family has so far loved everything I've made from it. I didn't even realize (silly me) it was ALL vegan recipes. Bonus! It will make a great gift for my vegan friends and friends who like Asian cooking.

Really great authentic all over vegan Asian cookbook. Because of the authenticity though you can expect plenty of trips to ethnic or specialty stores to pick up ingredients. But well worth it. Lot of spice and flavor added in each dish.

The recipes I've made from this have been pretty good, if basic. Many of the recipes are quite simple and quick but I find myself always adding to them. It is quite small, a little over a hundred pages with no pictures. 22 mains, 10 sides, 8 desserts, 6 "extra" (sauces and such). I've also already noticed several mistakes, nothing egregious. I was expecting something a little more substantial but it seems like a pretty easy entry into Asian cooking while I find something more in depth.

I love all the recipes in this book! Some recipes need a little tweeting but everyone has different taste buds! Overall a great recipe book to own!
