I read this when it was first published back in '86 and it was such an astounding book I bought at least another half dozen to give to people I thought would appreciate the message being delivered.It's also available online as a download for $1.00 from the author. The online edition also has some updates in it.

pages are brown with age and the read is slow. It's interesting and informative and gives me a lot to consider and contemplate. I can't read more than a page or even a paragraph without having to stop and consider the impacts on life and my world. good book!

If you were to ask the world's greatest authorities on modern technology to select the five most influential books written thus far on that subject, Engines of Creation would probably be on most (if not all) lists. In it, Drexler analyzes "the coming era of nanotechnology." Obviously, that era has (since 1986) arrived. Nonetheless, Drexler's observations remain both valid and instructive. The book is organized as Part One: The Foundations of Foresight, Part Two: Profiles of the Possible, and Part Three: Dangers and Hopes. In certain respects, Engines of Creation is even more valuable today than it was when first published. It should be required reading for undergraduate and graduate students (especially those at work on a degree in engineering, the natural sciences, mathematics, or business) as well as for executives in organizations which hope to survive the "age of nanotechnology." Think of your organization as a vehicle. Viewed as such, it obviously needs an engine, fuel, a transmission, a brake, an accelerator, etc. Speed is only one component of the formula for success. Durability is another. For your organization to reach its destination, it must also have a map. Engines of Creation is about technology, of course, and it is also about innovation in an age when speed is often the difference between success and failure. But Drexler also provides the equivalent of a map to guide his reader. Misdirected speed can demolish an entire organization as well as a single vehicle....and those within it. Years from now, Engines of Creation will still be read and admired. Why? Because it will still be relevant.

Engines of Creation describes the foundations of and the issues surrounding humankind's increasing potential for building molecular machines. (Indeed as we stand here on the verge of 2008, notable accomplishments in nanotechnology continue to be made.) Drexler's "starter kit" comprises what he calls "universal assemblers," which are nanomachines designed for a simple task, such as replacing defective genetic links with healthful ones or bonding one cellular structure to another....I'm impressed with what the author and his peers have deeply pondered on preventing nanotechnological disasters, either from accident or from conscious intention of some malefactor. When one realizes a technology that can terraform planets can also readily destroy them... and us, one becomes a bit careful in how the technology is handled. I read several books on nanotechnology that were both more recent and more technically realistic, but this book wowed me with both breadth and depth of vision. Few tomes compare in scope - Godel, Escher, and Bach perhaps? Ending Aging? There presently isn't anything like the clarion call to nanoscale research that this book represents, and it is not a definitive historical artifact for nothing.This is about the best overview of the conceptual space of nanotechnology you can get right now - even after 24+ years. It's brilliant, it's conscise, it's visionary. It *is* a little much. Accept that and enjoy, and it may become your favorite popular science book.I think much of what Drexler proposes is impossible - as impossible as full human consciousness emulation and interstellar travel anyway. It seems to annoy or overwhelm some readers that Drexler goes so far. It bothered me every now and then. Given a century or three, who knows. It's dubious science, as it reaches beyond tested theories, but it is *great* hard science fiction. Plenty of real science, and I found nothing truly erroneous.If you are looking for something grittier, Drexler's newer books (and work) build on this. For second opinions I recommend Soft Machines and Nanomedicine: basic capabilities - they are more scholarship oriented. Read Engines first: it's hard to put down and it covers so much.If you are interested in nanotechnology, read this book.That is all.

Drexler's ideas are way ahead of his times but are coming more mainstream (read Stephenson's Diamond Age and Bear's Slant). Drexler is able to describe a coherent project plan to develop and implement the technology of the future. This book will inspire and amaze generations of engineers (and obviously, SF writers) for years to come. Although I don't see any reason for the existence of Universal Assemblers (I hope I'm wrong), Drexler describes reasonable rationals for future society-changing products.

i bought this largely because the reviews indicated it was helpful in learning how to operate the spiralizer, but in fact it really didn't give much help at all, a real disappointment. I am a vegetarian so many of the recipes were useless, and they all seemed to be based on either spirals as "noodles" and spirals in salads - not a very wide range of ideas. I have come up with a lot more on my own. I am giving the book to someone who may appreciate it more.

I had recently gotten my Mueller Spiralizer and found some decent spiralizer recipes online, but then I got this book and I'm SO glad I did. Now it's as if my zucchini spaghetti maker is in the hands of an expert chef. My kids are crazy about zoodles and everything I prepare with these recipes. They have no idea they're eating so healthy...highly recommend this book!

I received a free Kindle edition of this. I don't have a Müeller Spiral-Ultra Vegetable Spiralizer, I have an Inspiralizer, a Vegetti, and also a Paderno.I did read the section on using the Müeller, and it seems to be thorough and well-written and stresses how to safely use, and clean it.I have already bookmarked several recipes to try. She has some good ideas that I hadn't thought of -serving beef stew over squash noodles, and using zucchini noodles to make kugel-sweet or less sweet, there are directions for both.The navigation is fine, the editing needs a bit of tweaking, and the occasional instruction needs a bit of clarifying-such as do you use the entire bok choy stem and leaf, or not. All recipes have the nutrition information, which is a very good thing. The recipes run the gamut from very low-sodium to fairly high, to very high, and it's nice to know this ahead of time.The subtitle mentions "potatoes into lasagna" but I couldn't find any mention of this in the book. It's a moot point for me, because I can't have potatoes, but I did want to read about her technique. I use zucchini sliced on a mandoline for lasagna noodles.I enjoyed reading this, even the recipes I can't make because they contain forbidden foods have given me creative ideas. I'm looking forward to trying the recipes I can have. The recipes look good; even the ones I can't have do look good to me.She's very nice, and responds to problems that need to be fixed.

I've bought half a dozen different brands of "spiralizers" and none of them worked properly except for this one. I know I still need practice with using it, but so far it's worked just as promised. I was beginning to think I'd never be able to enjoy zucchini "noodles" and now I can. This device is substantially more well-made than others I've tried and discarded. Something you expect for a German made product, I guess.

It's hard finding recipe books that don't call for a bunch of ingredients I don't have on hand and require a ton of prep time😙. Most healthy eating books are like that and I honestly bought this book expecting the exact same thing! Thankfully my expectations weren't met! These are easy, quick, delicious and nutritious recipes that I have (so far) loved and my children too! I especially enjoy the soup section!

After I purchased my Müeller Spiral-Ultra Vegetable Spiralizer, I realized Mueller's videos were somewhat lacking in information. This book is a good adjunct: shows you which blades to use and the results you get, with pics of both blades and result. Just looking at the different shapes gave me ideas on how to use them.We've tried the Chili Mac recipe, and everyone loved it. Although there are not a lot of truly new recipes for spiralized vegetable main dishes (there are a lot of very similar ones out there), there are some I've bookmarked to try.in the future.

While this book has beautiful color photos on covers, there are NO recipe photos in book. The whole book is produced on poor quality paper in black and white. The few "how-to-use the device" photos in first few page are grainy and of poor quality. It also has no index in back of book to search for specifics food recipes - such as sweet potato - and does not even have a chapter on "vegetable" recipes to help in that way, making it difficult to be useful as a resource. I would not recommend this book and I returned it. Priced too high considering the quality.

I bought the Mueller Spiralizer and the Mueller Spiralizer cookbook. It has lots of recipes for healthy preparation of meals that promote weight loss. Many times it is boring to make some vegetable recipes. But this book and others by J.S. Amie informs you how to take many vegetables and spiralize them. This opens the door to a new world of recipes as well as promoting the use of some vegetables like squash, beets, etc. in interesting ways to make you want to eat healthier meals at home rather than settle for unhealthy meals at local fast food restaurants. I highly recommend this book as well as the spiralizer and the other books by J.S. Amie.

Hart's real passion is to defend the idea of "church [alone] as mediator of divine grace" (p.34). His determination to view Nevin's life and work through this grid shapes the content and tone of the book so significantly that Nevin's own deviations from that agenda are put down to "naivete" (p.43), poor health (p.73), and so on. The result is a relentlessly tendentious book. In the end, Nevin is more a vehicle for the writer's own thought than a figure worthy of more impartial study in his own right. A better choice would be Theodore Appel's "Life and Work of John Williamson Nevin."

In America, the concept of the "covenant" has degenerated into what the popular mind views as a "contract", a vertical arrangement of preference and convenience.In popular reformed theology, this devolution has reduced the church to little more than a voluntary association, presbyterian style, and worship as a devotional governed by Robert's Rules of Order.For Nevin, covenant cannot be conceived apart from the God who speaks visibly through the sacraments. For Nevin,the Church is nothing less than the historical manifestation of the Body of Christ in direct union and communion with her Risen, Glorified Lord. Worship therefore is not governed by earthly rules of Puritan propriety and procedure but rather "God's Service" where God calls man into His presence and ministers to man through Word and Sacrament, Prayer and Praise."Reformed" ecclesiology without Nevin's view of the covenant is bound to degenerate into sectarianism and, ultimately, become a humanistic enterprise in search of "new methods" to ape the life only the Risen Christ can impart: the catechetical system versus the "Anxious Bench".For his (and Schaff's) efforts, so-called "reformed theologians" have slandered him with the label "Romanist" while themselves embracing positions that would render Calvin unable to be ordained in their presbyteries due to his view of the sacraments which Nevin called the "reformed" church to return to (in his work on the "Mystical Presence").This excellent biography should be read by all those who are aghast at the shallowness of modern "reformed" worship and church life and who seek an alternative. John Williamson Nevin, a largely forgotten 19th-century American theologian, was a man on a mission. As D.G. Hart makes clear in this apt intellectual biography, Nevin passionately desired to return the Presbyterian and Reformed churches in America to a more ecclessial form of piety--one centered on an understanding of the church as Christ's Body, where His living presence is encountered in Word and Sacrament.The Second Great Awakening and evangelists like Charles Finney had taken American protestantism in a very different direction, where the role of the church was de-emphasized in favor a piety centered on revivalism and individuals' own "anxious bench" conversion experiences. Nevin became the leading theologian at Mercersburg Seminary and its parent denomination, the German Reformed Church (later RCUS). He used this position to try to make the German Reformed Church a kind of test case for his "high-church" views--which, as he demonstrated, were far closer to the convictions of John Calvin and other leading reformers than the religious enthusiasm of Finney on the one hand, or the sub-sacramental intellectualism of men like Charles Hodge on the other. First, he was the principle architect of what has become known as "Mercersburg Theology." Later, toward the end of his career, he tried to apply his views liturgically as the denomination sought to create new worship resources for the now English-speaking church.Despite Nevin's wide influence within his own denomination during his lifetime, he met great opposition that ultimately stifled his thought and contributions. His churchly piety then, as now, was simply unpopular among many American Reformed Christians. This, coupled with the denominational mergers that ultimately caused the German Reformed Church to disappear from the American scene, has left his work unjustly neglected.

A lot of good and insightful material here in this book.

Extremely helpful book that outlines well-designed research across three broad sections: Culture, life, and faith. I highly recommend to anyone who is curious to know how the intersection of faith and culture are being interpreted in our time.
