I don't usually like stories with flashbacks (thankfully, the flashbacks are chronological), but this is one where the technique really pays off. Two planets rotate around each other, one has a rich biosphere and lacks many resources while the other is barely able to produce enough food for a rather small population, but is rich in resources the other planet needs. The former planet has a strict authoritarian government and unlimited luxuries for the rich and rather austere lives for the poor who have no freedom at all. This contrasts with the austere second planet where everyone is at least theoretically free in a human/computer organized anarchy, but some people manage to have more power than others despite a system that should not favour anyone over another (everyone usually works together for the common good).This book is a must read. It also includes an english professor's reading guide at 94% that includes a brief synopsis of the social situation at the time the novel was written to help explain why the author wrote the book the way she did and then poses thought provoking questions about each chapter. I suggest that you read this guide first and then read each chapter and try to answer the questions in the reading guide and repeat until you have completed the novel. Reading the book in this way will be a far more moving and enjoyable experience.

This is the first LeGuin work that I ever read that did not impress me. I found it to be heavy-handed propaganda. It's not that I disagree with the thrust of the thoughts presented (I don't). It's just that the book was so dense and so obvious that I quickly found it getting on my nerves. I was able to finish it only with some effort against boredom on my part. A good book never bores me, but this one did.I never thought I'd say this about one of her novels or stories.

How does one write a review of such a book, seriously? This book is magnificent. It is my first time reading anything by Le Guin so perhaps that colors my experience. While this is the fifth book in the Hainish Cycle, I am assured that it is a good place to start and the series need not be read in order. Reading it certainly did not feel like anything was missing or that I'd missed out on a backstory at all.This book chronicles the related people of twin planets, one previously colonized by settlers from the other. The narrative vividly contrasts various types of social organization and behavior, including freedom (and the lack of it), government (and the lack of it), mutual cooperation and competition, and so forth. While the differences seem stark at first, the subtleties become more apparent as more is revealed. It not only entertains but forces the reader to think about alternate ways of living that have been dismissed or not considered before.The story is delivered mostly from the view of the protagonist, from two different periods in his life. The movement back and forth from his earlier life to his later life helps with a deeper understanding of the intricacies of the tale. The timelines come together eventually, of course, but the beauty of the book is in the wholeness of the telling.The author occasionally creates words, or at least they appear to be created as they are new to me and not in dictionaries or wikipedia, but these created words have meanings that are obvious. They add to the beautiful fabric of the chronicle.

One of the best books I have ever read. Has some of the best philosophical concepts of a truly anarchist society. Beauty. Brotherhood. No waste. Truly astounding. I spent too many years of my life not knowing anything about Ursula K. Le Guin's Hainish Cycle, and most especially this incredible tome. It is a mountain. It's depth is astounding yet doesn't smack you in the head with it....it is not pretentious. What Le Guin poses here is a 300-plus page discussion on the benefits/disadvantages of creating an anarchistic society, of capitalism, of property, of privacy, of freedom. I will now spend my days diving headlong into the rest of the Hainish books. Thank you, Ursula K. Le Guin, you given me the science fiction I want! Intellectual, yet exciting!

Every society claims to have the answer, but each is deeply flawed. What happens when one person will never give up the pursuit of absolute self realization, doing what they are meant to do, what they know is right? Of course, they are crushed, over and over.One of my favorite novels of any genre. Tackles all the right questions. Challenges all political schools of thought, institutions of science, morality, industry. Does so fairly and develops compelling characters. Finds meaning in the meaningless suffering, on the level of a Dostoyevsky novel, compares favorably to The Idiot especially. A powerful message without ever preaching. Especially if you're interested in physics, this is a great book to read. If you're new to science fiction or have no interest in physics, this is a great place to start, being one of the most underrated classics.

For me, this science fiction novel was a solid 4.5 stars. Not 5 stars, because at times, I found myself wondering when the author was going to move on. But that is my only quibble with Ursula Le Guin. Its rightfully acknowledged as one of the genre's classics and many think its a classic of general fiction.The book jacket summarizes the story well. This Ursula Le Guin novel is a tale of a utopian society, and the characters that struggle to keep it a utopia. It is a multi-layered novel. I think readers have and will get different messages depending on their circumstances. Its story is certainly relevant to what's occurring in politics today. Highly recommended.

Poems only, no tales as advertised. Why did the publisher choose such a misleading title? You're only getting half of what you paid for but at full price.

Absolutely in love with this book! I got the Barnes & Noble leatherbound edition. It's a beautiful and well made book with metallic silver edged pages and a red ribbon page marker. All the poems and tales I was hoping for, and then some. All in all a little over 1000 pages. I could go on...but time to dive in! 📖

I feel rather cheated. Despite the title and boastful description on this particular format, not a single tale is included. The formatting is no different than if it was merely a paper copy of a webpage, with what seem to have been hyperlinks to the notes and table of contents.I ordered the paperback, which is pictured here on Amazon, and expected a complete collection; instead, I only got his poetry and a few works of prose, without any short stories or "The Narrative of Arthur Gordon Pym of Nantucket".If you order, I caution you not to order the paperback version, as it appears to be the only one with this problem judging by reviews.

One of the best collections of Edgar Allen Poe out there. This is a good value all around. Has a few stories that are hard to find and I appreciate the order of the book. The synopsis of his life and times in the beginning really helps the reader get into the strange time and place in American history that Edgar Allen Poe lived in.

This edition collects all of Poe's fiction and poetry in a single volume, including The Fall of the House of Usher," "The Tell-Tale Heart," "The Pit and the Pendulum,." "The Raven," "Annabel Lee," the full-length novel "The Narrative of Arthur Gordon Pym of Nantucket", and much more.Yet this book contains no tales and only poems, this is such a misleading title and very unfair to people purchasing this book.

Chose this book to read for my high school class because I love Poe's work. The book pages aren't numbered, there are these strange question marks in boxes everywhere. It seems as if the storied were taken from a computer and printed out. The book is really cheaply made and the quality is horrible. I would send it back and get a different copy but my homework is due in two days...

Can't believe I fell for the title of this book without looking at the reviews! It is just the poems, even though the title says it includes the complete tales and poems. Glad I just got the kindle and I didn't pay the full price for the book.

I had forgotten how beautiful and lyrical E.A.Poe's poetry is,along with with his compelling tales. And here are the requisite extra words to fulfill the dumb word quota. Sometimes one word with no title is more than adequate. I hardly ever leave reviews because of the word and title rules. Which is a shame because at least giving stars should be counted for the author's work.That said, with the complete collection you can dip in and out on a whim. Everyone (yes, everyone) should give Poe a try.

This is my third Instant Pot cookbook written by Coco Morante and bound to be my favorite. As someone who leans toward a vegetarian diet, I didn’t realize it could be even better vegan. Like tonight’s effort - an Enchilada Casserole with Chipotle Cashew Cream - totally delicious, flavorful with no regrets on missing out cheese. So healthy yet satisfying. The recipes I’ve tried so far, all homeruns. The Instant Pot is amazing, but it helps having wonderful recipes. Thank you Coco.

I love this book! So far our favorites are: Chana Masala (we couldn’t stop eating it), the delicious Greek Style Lima Beans with Almond Feta, and the spicy Penne Arrabiata w/ Meatballs. Full disclosure: for the Chana Masala, I took the suggested shortcut and bought the prepared Maya Kaimal brand of Goan Coconut Indian Simmer Sauce at Whole Foods. We are looking forward to trying Eggplant Adobo, the Hibiscus Agave Sipper when the weather warms up, and the cheesecakes. Thanks, Coco Morante!

Not at all wowed by the recipe choices. Literally only 2 or 3 sound like I want to bother to make. Not many pictures either

My wife and I LOVE this book. We've made dinner from it almost every night since getting it. I eat meat and my wife is a vegetarian. We have not missed meat/dairy with any of these recipes so far.So far we've made:- Mexican style rice. SO easy. I know we'll be using this recipe often- Polenta with black pepper. This was another easy recipe, and is far superior in terms of ease to polenta made on the stove top- Palak tofu. We've made this twice and is so far the favorite- Peanut butter chocolate cheese cake. This one is as good as it sounds. 100% recommend.As far as the book goes, the are a few pros & cons.Pros:- Very easy instructions to follow. Perfect for instant pot beginners- Delicious/healthy recipes made with whole ingredients. So far we haven't had anything we don't like- A good variety of recipesCons:- Pictures are beautiful but I'd like more of them

Joi Barrios holds a Ph.D. in Filipino Literature from the University of the Philippines. She serves as a Lecturer teaching Filipino and Philippine Literature at the University of California, Berkeley while on leave as an Associate Professor from the University of the Philippines Diliman (UPD). This is a good book for beginners. It throws you right into learning the language. It's more like a workbook, where you learn phrases and more while also doing fill in the blank. I would prefer a more step-by-step approach, meaning they start off with the alphabet, numbers, characters, etc, yet this book is the opposite approach. It immerses you right away. A DVD with mp3s is included. I haven't been able to get the DVD to work on Windows 10 yet, but I will try more options to make it work. Check this out if you're new to the language.

My wife is Filipino so she's helping me learn.

This is a beginners book...but it starts the student in learning conversations instead of simple words and building up to sentences or thoughts. The CD that come with the book was somewhat helpful, again it immerses the reader in conversation instead of basic words to form sentences. But it was helpful in my needs. I think there should be a book designed for those not ready to have conversations but to learn words then simple sentences.

Book does a very poor job at explaining the structure of the language. Multiple typos throughout, shows clear lack of editing. Expects you to infer grammar rules and syntax immediately without more than one example. Layout of lessons are also messy. Overall terrible and not for beginners.

Ignoring the fact that they forgot to include Appendix 3 and 4 totally (though listing it in the TOC), I find the style not to my liking. Though it suggests that after finishing a chapter that you now know how to use possessive pronuns, in truth you can (at most) say one or two cardboard phrases with little understanding about 'why' you are saying it that way (or understanding any other way of expressing the same).

The cd lost me about the 5th page, it started speaking about something else there but i couldnt find it. So CD wasnt really good, but goi g through the book alone and googling the pronunciation of the words, help just as well.

I'm giving this book four stars because it contains most of the things needed to learn Tagalog. Yet as always it is advised you use multiple resources to learn a language. Later on I shall buy a Tagalog Dictionary to cross reference what I have learned. The previous negative reviews turned me off a bit from this title however I brought it quite some time ago (February 2012). The audio is there indeed. You need to pause and listen. I suppose it's a bit like Pimsleur. I may purchase Elementary Tagalog (by the same publishing company) depending on if it's more in depth with vocabulary and I feel there's more still left to learn.

This book is delightful. My children love it and want to read it and listen to the accompanying CD repeatedly. I have read it to their 1st grade classes, and it was a hit. The timing was perfect, because John Glenn had just died the day before I read with their classes. It[s a great way to encourage young children to aim high with their dreams and not let others tell them that they are unrealistic. The story describes Neil Armstrong being told throughout his childhood that going to the moon was impossible, yet he persisted, and the rest is history. It's hard to read it without getting teary-eyed.

Such a good book!!! We were given this book as a gift and it’s thw absolute best!! My son loves it and so do I! Shows kids how anything is possible when you set goals and work towards them. I bought this book for a gift and will continue to purchase this book for kids in my life!!

This is the fictional story of Neil Armstrong. Neil is a boy with a dream - from a very young age, he wants to go to the moon, but everyone around him discourages him because his dream is too big, too audacious, has never been done. They mean well, they don't want him to be disappointed, but Neil will not be talked out of his dream. He studies the subjects necessary, takes menial jobs when necessary, works hard and keeps his dream close.This is really a sweet book, encouraging yet simple. It is actually a song, and the book includes a CD of Tom Saunders singing the story. My kids absolutely love it and listen to the CD over and over again and I find them singing the chorus throughout the day. It is quite catchy and Saunders has a nice voice.And then there are the illustrations. Cynthia Nugent is obviously quite talented and captures the spirit of the story in colourful, whimsical drawings that kids are sure to love. My kids poured over the pictures, looking at every detail.This is a fantastic book that I would highly recommend to kids. I love the message about following your dreams, being passionate, and doing the work you need to get where you want.

My 5 year old loves this book! The message of Neil Armstrong wanting to go to the moon since he was little encourages kids to dream big. He worked hard and finally his dream came true. I think the message of having big dreams and being able to work to acjieve them is a topic kids need to hear.My son sings the song now thanks to the wonderful CD that comes with it. The CD actually has the clip when Neil lands on the moon which was great too. Illustrations are beautifully done, a great book for any space lover!
