I found myself more disappointed in this book the more I read. It turned out to be mainly the author’s vent on ecclesiastical issues he finds disturbing, although he does make some valid points. At times, it read more like a stilted thesis, lacking flow and readability, and at times, it used a sarcastic tone. There were many misused commas also. I think the book is useful to give the reader ideas to consider and ponder, but not to build faith, encourage, or inspire. I didn’t find much I could take away and keep.
I came across Douglas Wilson several years ago. He says what needs to be said. In my view, he is graciously firm and not lacking in thoughtfulness. There is a sense of urgency in getting out the message that our worship pf God should not be casual and there is also a sense that God has mercy on us as we plod through this with minds and hearts that do desire to obey. I both enjoyed reading it and trembled before God at how great a matter worship is.
For anyone that doesnt know why you do the things you do on Sunday you need to read this. Doug hits on several weak points in the modern church. This is a great book for anyone in leadership to find greater meaning in what we are doing on the Lords Day.
I don't agree with Doug's understanding on the covenant but overall very needed little book. Chapters on Thundering the Word and the Lord's Supper are very good.
This book is edifying in so many ways and it inspires with warmth and wit. I recommend this to anyone wishing to see Christ's Bride flourish in this generation to a thousand generations.
Doug Wilson always has good thought provoking books. This one is not disappointing.
Yes it’s an excellent book but I have a hard time giving it five stars like the other readers. The title is pretty misleading and he mentions the high church Puritan in the subtitle but it’s only one chapter in a very small book. Almost thin enough to be a booklet. Really it is asking for covenant renewal as a response to individualism. Proper worship does not seem to be the driving force but a backdrop. That being said for what he does talk about he has good points.
Love the product. Arrived right on time.
